Be it known that I, ROBERT C. LAMBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crawford, in the county of Dawes, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mail-Receivers; and
I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in mail bag receiving devices for cars and the leading object in view is to provide a mail bag receiving device for cars embodying a door hinged for horizontal movement to a mail car and a flexible apron connected to the lower edge of the door and to the threshold of the car door opening, the door being adapted to swing outwardly of the car and having hinges at either end so that it can be opened either way.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain combinations, construction, and arrangements of parts, clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a car provided with the improved mail bag receiving means, Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view thereof.
Referring to the accompanying drawings 5 denotes the mail car having the usual mail doorway 6. On one side of the mail doorway 6 the hinge leaves 7 are secured, said hinge leaves being provided with the usual pintle eyes 8. On the other side of the doorway the hinge leaves 9 are arranged and said hinge leaves are provided with the usual pintle eyes 10. A door 11 is adapted to fit in the doorway 6 and close the same and said doorway is provided with hinge leaves 12 located on one side thereof which are provided with the usual pintle eyes 13 adapted to engage the pintle eyes 8 of the hinge leaves 7. The door 11 is also provided with a second set of hinge leaves 14: which are provided with the pintle eyes 15 adapted to engage the pintle eyes 10 of the hinge leaves 9. The door 11 may be hinged to either side of the car by passing the pintle rod 16 through the eyes 8 and 13 of the hinge leaves 7 and 12 or through the eyes 10 and 15 of the hinge leaves 9.
' A flexible apron 17 is secured to the threshold of the doorway at one of its edges and at the other edge is secured to the lower part of the door 11. This flexible apron 17 is adapted to catch a mail bag which can be suspended releasably on any suitable hook or platform and positioned tobe engaged by the outer edge of the door 11. On each side of the lower part of the door 11 a staple 18 is secured and a hook rod 19 is provided for the purpose of engaging either one of the staples 18 and close the door 11 when the same has been swung to an open position.
The door 11 may be provided with any special kind of receiving fork hinged either t-o the inner or outer side thereof for disengaging mail bags from delivering hooks or devices.
When the mail bag is going in one direction the pintle 16 is extended through a part of the hinge leaves and when it is going in the opposite direction it is extended through the other hinge leaves so that the outer end of the door is disposed forwardly in the direction of the travel of the train.
I claim:
1. A mail bag receiving device for cars comprising a mail car having a doorway, a door for the doorway, means for hinging the door to the car disposed in the doorway, and a flexible apron secured at one end to the car at the bottom of the doorway and at the other end to the door adjacent its bottom edge and adapted to support the mail bag.
2. In combination, a mail car having a doorway, a door disposed in the doorway throughout its height, hinge leaves secured to the car near one side of the doorway, hinge leaves secured to the car near the other side of the doorway, hinge leaves secured to the opposite vertical edges of the door and adapted to engage the hinge leaves of the car, a pintle for detachably securing the hinge leaves of the door to the hinge leaves of the car, and a flexible and foldable apron secured to the lower edge of the door and to the car and adapted to support a mail bag.
