Description
F. L. HUNT.
' PACKAGE LIFTER.. v APPLICATION rum)- MAR. 28, 1911.
1,024,991. Patented Apr. 30, 1912.
.UNITED-STATESPATENT OFFICE.
FRANK LEWIS HUNT, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
PACKAGE-LIFTER.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, FRANK LEWIS HUNT, citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package-Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in package lifting devices and has for its object to provide a simple eflectual and safe device for lifting packages from high shelves in stores and similar places.
it-h the above and other objects in view, I have invented the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my inven tion the handle portion being broken away, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device a portion of the handle being broken away, Fig. 41 is a longitudinal sectional view through the lower fragment of Fig. 8, and Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view taken on line AA of Fig. 3.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the specification and in the several views in the accompanying drawings in which,
1 is a pole which may be of any desired length and upon the upper end of which is mounted a head 2 which has a bifurcated end 3 in which is pivotally mounted a pair of jaws 1 and 5 having oppositely projecting lever arms 6 and 7 which are reduced in thickness. These jaws are held normally open by a spring 8 located in the enlarged openings 9 and 10 and encircling the pivoted pin 11 and having its ends fixed to the opposing jaw members. Pivotally mounted on the lower portion 15 of the head is a bell crank 13 through an opening in the end 141 of which is strung a wire 15 one end 16 of which is secured to the lever arm 6 and the other end 17 of which is secured to the lever arm 7. To the end of the bell crank 13 is secured a rod 19 the other end of which is secured to the projection 20 of the crank handle 21 having an angular end 22 bifurcated and pivoted to the handle 1.
Pivoted in asocket 23 in the handle 1 is a catch 24 the head 25 of which is adapted to engage the serrations 26 on the under side of the handle 21. This catch is held normally against the handle by the spring 27 When it is desired to lift a package the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 28, 1911.
, flexible,
Patented. Apr. 30, 1912. Serial No. 617,404.
device is gripped by the lower portion of the handle 1 and engaging the handle 21 and the ends 28 and 29 of the jaws are placed astride of the package and the handle 21 firmly pressed toward the handle the latch 24: will engage the serrations and thereby lock the handle in its lowermost position causing the jaws 4 and 5 to retain their grip upon the package when the handle 21 is released.
.Having now described my invention that which I claim to be new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is,
l. A package lifter consisting of a pole having an obtuse angular bifurcated head thereon, jaws pivoted to said head and means for opening and closing said jaws, said jaws being pivoted intermediate of their inner ends and a horizontally disposed one piece loop connecting said ends, said loop being flexible, a bell crank mounted on said head and connected to said loop, said bell crank operating rearwardly of said head, a rod connected to said bell crank and extending diagonally of said pole.
2. A package lifter consisting of a pole having an obtuse angular bifurcated head thereon, jaws pivoted to said head and means for opening and closing the aws, said aws being pivoted intermediate of their inner ends and a horizontally disposed one piece loop connecting said ends, said loop being a bell crank mounted on said head and connected to said loop, said bell crank operating rearwardly of said head, a rod connected to said bell crank and extending diagonally of said pole, said means for closing said jaws consisting of a crank handle pivoted to the lower end of said pole and to said rod.
3. A package lifter consisting of a pole having an obtuse angular bifurcated head thereon, jaws pivoted to said head and means for opening and closing said jaws, said jaws being pivoted intermediate of their inner ends and a horizontally disposed one piece 100p connecting said ends, said loop being flexible, a bell crank mounted on said head and connected to said loop, said bell crank operating rearwardly of said head, a rod connected to said bell crank diagonally of said pole, said means for closing said jaws consisting of a crank handle pivoted to the lower end of said pole and to said rod, said means for opening said jaws consisting of a spiral spring mounted on and extending a pin and inclosed with sockets formed in said jaws, the ends thereof being connected to opposing jaws.
a. A package lifter consisting of a pole having an obtuse angular bifurcated head thereon, jaws pivoted to said head and means for opening and closing said jaws, said jaws being pivoted intermediate of their inner ends and a horizontally disposed one piece loop connecting said ends, said loop being flexible, a bell crank mounted on said head and connected to said loop, said bell crank operating rearwardly of said head, a rod connected to said bell crank and extending diagonally of said pole, said means for closing said jaws consisting of a crank handle pivoted to the lower end of said pole and to said rod, said means for openingsaid jaws consisting of a spiral spring mounted on a pin and inclosed with sockets formed in said jaws, the ends thereof being connected to opposing jaws and means for holding said jaws closed.
5. In a package lifter the combination of a handle having a bifurcated obtuse angled head thereon, a pair of jaws pivotally held in the bifurcated part of said head by means of a pin passing through openings in said jaws, said openings being larger than said pin, a spring mounted in said openings and having its ends fixed to opposing jaws whereby said jaws are normally held apart, a flexible loop connecting said jaws and means for operating said loop on a plane with said jaws whereby they may be closed.
In witness whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
