Application filed May 11, 1911.
To all whom it may concern Be it lmown that I, CHARLES WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngswood, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Faucets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in faucets and more particularly to those wherein the discharge pipe thereof is employed as a lever for operating the valve of said faucet.
The object of the invention is to provide a practical and eflicient device of the character described whereby the supply of the flow of water or other liquid is controlled through the valve of said device by the movement of the discharge or movable arm of the faucet thereby dispensing with the additional device usually employed for such purposes.
Another object of the invention consists in the employment of a specially designed valve which is positive in its operation and will withstand the constant usage to which the same is necessarily subjected, the parts comprising the valve being easily and conveniently adjusted and assembled and capable of compensating for the usual wear.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of the complete invention. Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on the lines '22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a central section taken on the lines 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of a modified form of the invention showing a drinking nozzle attached thereto. Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on the lines 55 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a vertical longitudinal section of the discharge arm of the valve shown in Fig. 4, showing the means,
portion or base which is adapted to be brought into binding contact with a stand or other surface having in connection therewith the usual wash basin, said standard having a depending screw threaded pipe extension 2 to which a water supply pipe is attached in the usual manner. The standard l is provided with a socket 3 forming a reservoir which is in communication with the pipe extension 2 and adjustably fitted in the upper end of said socket is a detachable cap 4, the flange 5 of the latter being normally in binding contact with the upper edge of the standard. The closure cap 4 is provided with an annular chamber 6 having an upper contacting wall, and snugly confined within said chamber is a filling 7 in the form of a collar of fibrous or hard vulcanite composition which practically eliminates all friction of the valve plug 8, the construction and location of which will be hereinafter described. The filling 7 thus confined within the cap is provided with a central bore 9 having a lower conical or flaring portion 10 and removably located in said bore is a rotatable valve plug 8 the lower conical end 11 of which conforms to the shape of the flaring portion of said filling, whereby when the said plug is located in its normal position the parts are snugly and uniformly assembled.
The lower reduced end 12 of the cap 4 is provided with apertures 13 which are oppositely located and arranged adjacent to the lower edge of the plug and likewise formed in the lower conical end of the plug 8 are registering apertures 14 which comcommunication with the oppositely positioned opening 18 formed in the stem portion of the valve plug at a suitable distance from its upper end.
The upper surface of the plug 4 is provided with an annular depression or seat 19 which is adapted to removably receive a gasket or washer 20 against which the lower surface of the connecting end of the diswith an annular chamber 17 which is in l charge pipe 16 is adapted to bear whereby a hermetically sealed union is formed during the various positions of said discharge pipe. The passage 15 of the stem of the valve plug 8 is closed by an adjusting nut 21, the latter being further employed for holding the parts in positlon when properly assembled and it Will be readily observed that by turning the nut in either direction the friction of the parts may be accurately adjusted for practical purposes. The upper end of the stem of the valve plug 8 when in its normal posltion is positioned a suitable distance below the upper surface of the connecting end of the discharge pipe 16 and the flange of the nut 21 will thus bear directly upon said surface of the pipe whereby the usual wear will be properly compensated for and the parts rigidly but movably secured together.
Communicating with the chamber 17 of the discharge pipe 16 is a passage 22 through which the water or other liquid passes to be discharged into a basin or other receptacle or place when the said pipe is turned horn zontally in the proper direction for opening the register ports 13 and 14 of the cap and plug respectively. Fixedly mounted upon the discharge pipe 16 adjacent to its delivery end is a button or knob 23 upon which is inscribed or properly placed the words Cold or Hot which knob also provides convenient means for manipulating or turning said pipe for operating the valve within the faucet.
In practice the parts comprising the invention are connectedly arranged and properly assembled in such a manner that when the discharge pipe 16 is turned in a horizontal position toproperly direct the water to the wash basin or other desired place the water will freely flow and can be readily regulated by a slight turn of the pipe in either direction and when it is desired to entirely shut off the Water the said pipe is turned a sufficient distance for that purnose.
1 In the modification shown in Fig. 4c the valve and the parts comprising the same are similarly constructed the discharge pipe 24, however, being properly connected to the remaining parts of the device in such a manner as to be operated in a vertical direction for controlling the valve and the passage for the water or other fluid therethrough. To the outer end of the discharge pipe 24 is removably secured a nozzle 25 which is in communication with said pipe, which nozzle is adapted to supply the water for drinking or other purposes. Removably located within the nozzle and covering the passage 26 therein is a disk of wire gauze 27 which is adapted to retard the excess pressure of water and thereby cause the water to flow evenly, and screwed into the upper end of said nozzle is a cover or cap 28, the screw threaded port-ion 29 of which is out of contact with the wire gauze thereby permitting the latter to automatically adjust itself vertically within the space formed for its reception within the nozzle and below the discharge opening 30 in said cap.
It is evident from the foregoing construction that the nozzle 25 can be turned in various positions and as shown, a collar 31 being employed, having an inwardly projecting annular flange 32 which is adapted to freely embrace the flange 33 formed on the connecting end of the pipe 2d the op posite end of said collar being screwed to the inner end of said nozzle 25, and a gasket disposed between the connected parts. By the employment of the construction just described the nozzle 25 may be turned in a vertical position when used for drinking purposes or properly adjusted in respect to the discharge pipe 24: or may be completely turned downwardly to properly direct the water into the basin for washing or other purposes.
In the construction last described the valve of the faucet is entirely closed when the discharge pipe 24- is in an elevated posit-ion and when the same is turned downwardly the valve will be operated and the water will freely fiow through the nozzle and the supply thereof regulated by the angular position of the pipe. It is further to be observed that the nozzle 25 may be conveniently turned for subsequent use before the discharge pipe 24 is turned downward for operating the valve or said nozzle may be turned after said arm is in its lowered position as may be desired.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construct-ion and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a faucet comprising a standard having a suitable water supply connection and a reservoir in communication therewith, a cap removably secured to and closing the upper end of said standard and having apertures formed in its lower reduced end for the free passage of the water there through, a lining of fiber located within said cap, a valve plug freely passing through said lining and having a lower conical end for frictional engagement with the correspondingly shaped portion of the said lining, said valve plug having a longitudinal passage formed therein and communicating with apertures located in the bottom of the plug, a discharge pipe fixedly mounted upon the upper end of the stem of the valve plug and communicating with openings formed in said stem, and a binding nut screwed into the upper open end of the stem of the plug to adjustably hold the parts together, whereby the discharge pipe operates as a lever for turning the valve plug for regulating the supply of water.
2. In a faucet the combination with a valve standard forming a reservoir, of acap removably secured within the upper open end of the standard, a fiber lining confined within the cap, a valve plug having a lower conical end, said plug having a passage therethrough and open at the top and openings communicating with said passage and registering with apertures formed in the lower reduced end of the cap, a discharge pipe fixedly mounted upon the projecting upper end of the valve plug and communicating with oppositely positioned openings formed in the plug, a nut screwed into the upper open endof the plug and in binding contact with the connected end of the discharge pipe, and a gasket seated in the cap and surrounding the valve plug against which the connecting end of the supply pipe is adapted to bear.
