GUARD-RAIL..
Patentedpr. 30, 1912.
To all whom it may concern f a resident of Savanna,
scription.
This invention relates to a new and im- 10 proved guard rail for a railroad or car@ track.
An object of this invention is to providej a guard rail which will be simple in con-i manufacture, j
struction, inexpensive to strong, durable, readily adjustable, positively safe in its action, and self-bracing.
A further object of provide a -guard rail which `may extend the track rail omitted forb the sake of clearunder the rail proper and be secured to the opposite side thereof, so that it cannot be readily turned over or be pulled out, and is so formed that lit will not be liable to catch the foot of Ia track-walker.
These and further objects, together with the construction and willvbe more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similarV characters of reference indicate corresponding 'parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary top plan View; Fig. 2 is a side view in elevation, with the guard rail in position on the ties, and with ness; Fig. 3 is a verticaltransverse section; and Fig. 4 is aA Aerspective View of the guard rail detached. Referring more particularly to the separ'ate parts of thisninvention as embodied in the form .shown in they-drawings', 1 indicatesa track rail, which is supported -in any usual manner on ties 2. Arranged alongside of the track rail 1, there is provided a guard rail 3, which has a plurality of openings 4 along one side thereof, whereby it may be attached by means of spikes 5 to the ties 2. The guard rail may em body a main body portion 6, from the lower side of which extend alplurality of arms 7,
this invention is tov combination of parts,
'track-walker or other 8 and 9, which are adapted to pass under the. track rail 1 a suilicient distance, sothat j brackets 10 provided on the free ends thereof and projecting upwardly therefrom may overhang at either side the ties 2 and be secured thereto by means of spikes 1,1 passing through apertures 12 in 'the overhangj ing portion `or' these brackets. It will be noted that t 'ese brackets 10 are raised above the 'surfaces of the arms 9 sufficiently to forma rid e, which may abut against the, flange ofthe trackrail 1 and prevent the accidental movement of the guard rail relative to the yrank rail. The bottom sides of the arms t and 9 may be provided withV downwardly-extending ribs 18, which are adapted to engage in the roadbed and prevent longitudinal slipping or shifting of the .guard rail; It will be noted that the corners on the ends of the guard rail which face the track rail are cut away at 14 and 15, so that the wheels vofthe car can readilyv rail, on entering the stretch where the guard rail is usedin connect-ion with the track rail. At this point and anypther suitable points desired, the guard rail may loefV provided with foot guards 16, whichjitlwill be noted by reference to-Fig. 3, come up in close juxtaposition to the head of the track rail 1 and enter 'the channel'formed between the head and the flange of the track rail a sli ht distance, so `as to prevent t-he foot o a person from being caulghtbet-Ween the track rail and the guard rai It will be noted that the guards 16 may be formed co-extensive. with the arms 7 to 9 and may provideenlargements 17 thereon, which are cut overhangs which overhangl the )flange of the track rail 1, `and thus aid in securingY the lguard rail in track rail.
understood when taken in connection with T pass between the track rail and the guard position alongside of the The utility of the device will be readily the above description. In placing the guard rail in position, the roadbed is dug out suis' ciently alongside of the track, and the'arms 7, -8 and 9 slipped beneath the rail a sufi'i cient distance so that lthey can be shoved up Losanna site side by the spikes 5, which are driven through the apertures 4t into the ties which come beneath them. rihe distance oi' the brackets l0 on the guard rail from the body port-ion is so regulated-that the longitudinal. -Working tace, indicated at 20, ofthe guard mii, will be spaced apart from the track.
rail l a sutlicient distance to perniit the tiange ot the Wheel on the car to pass be tween them. 4
It will be seen that by virtue of the con tact ot the bracket l With the track rail l on one side and the overhanging oi the enlargements l? on the other side, thel guard railvvili be secured ixedly, not only to the ties Q1, but also to the track rail 1.' The lat `foot guards, by virtue ot their location and extension, will prevent the toot of a track-Walker from being jammed between the track rail and the guard rail.
ll5/*bile I have shown one embodiment ot my invention, l do notxwish to be limited to r protected in various changes, alterations and' modllcatlons Whlchmay come Withmthe scope of the appended ciams.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:w f n,
l. e. guard railv adapted to cooperate with a track rail, comprising abody portion having the corners`- of the side thereof :tacing said track railcut away to permit the entrance of the Wheels of a car betweensaid -track rail and said guard rail, and toot guards locatedl eneath thesev cutaway lportions andadapted to prevent the entrapping cfa tootbetween said guard rail `and said. track rail, said Vfoot guards extending into the channel formed between the head and harige of said track rail, and also coming in close juxtaposition to said head.A
