Description

. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
G. S. BROWNE, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
BODY-BRACE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 10,248, dated November 22, 1853.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known th`at I, GARDNER S. BROWNE, of the city and county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Body-Braces, (an abdominal brace and shoulder brace united g) and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description.
Drafwz'ngs.-No. 15, the body brace, (an abdominal brace andshoulder brace united by a pair of springs of plate brass or steel.)
No. 16, the abdominal brace. No. 1S, the shoulder brace. No. l, l, the dor-sal, or spinal springs, of plate brass or steel, natural, tempered, lacquered, gilded, or plated; and constructed with two holes in each at the ends C, C, by which they may be made fast to the sacral spring (No. 3,) a screw passing through one of the holes and a pivot through the other, whereby, they are rendered rigid, allowing them no lateral motion. At the points D, I), there is in each, a hole for a. screw, by which they are made fast to the sacral spring (No. 3) and on which they move; and the others, oblong, circular holes, through which the two pivots of the sacral spring protrude, allowing a lateral mot-ion to the dorsal springs, rendering the body brace flexible and easy to the patient, Without displacing the abdominal part, as in most other spring abdominal braces. No. 2, 2, the pelvic or hip springs. No. 3, the sacral spring, to which is attached the dorsal and pelvic springs and dorsal pads. No. et, 4t, the dorsal pads. No. 5, 5, the star plates for uniting and holding the pelvic and sacral springs together and attaching them to the dorsal pads 4, 4l. No. 6, the spring of the attachment No. 9, composed of steel-two small knobs, one in each end for depressing the spine, either end of it, when attaching the pelvic springs; and two catches, one in each end for holding` the pelvic springs when adjusted; and a small brass rocker, on the under side, by which-the attachment is fastened to the abdominal pad. No. 7, the upper and larger part of the attachment, of brass, steel or other metal-of an oblong, circular, i'iattened tube-into which the pelvic springs enter, and where they are held fast by the catches of the .spring llo. 6, which is fastened to the underside of this by two rivets in the center. No. 8, the abdominal pad, held to the pelvic springs by the attachment. No. 9, the attachment complete. No. 10, the dorsal and sacral springs united.
Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Uniting the shoulder and abdominal brace by pliable springs l, l, so arranged and constructed, that they shall be confined on each .side of the spine, to the abdominal brace, and when fastened at one end, permit a limited vibration; and when fastened by the other end, be rigid, in the manner described; whereby the same brace can be adapted to a variety of patients in differentstages of disease, or, to different stages of disease in the same patient.
