FOLDING OPERA-GLASS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR LEVY, optician, a citizen of the Republic of France, and residing at Paris, France, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Opera-Glasses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My present invention has for its object to provide a folding double opera-glass which is characterized by the fact that when the opera-glass is non-folded the two tubular cases which may be made elliptical, oval, rectangular or the like in cross-section, are located adjacently and parallel to each other, while when the opera-glass is folded said cases are alined one above the other.
My invention will be readily understood from the following description taken in connection wit-h the accompanying drawings showing the construction of my invention and wherein Figure 1 shows an elevation and vertical section of a non-folded opera-glass embodying my invention; Fig. 2 shows an elevation and partial section of the folded operaglass, Fig. 3 shows the cross-section of a tubular case 011 line AA of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional detail view of the adjusting mechanism.
In the construction illustrated the arm 1 carries a portion of the ocular system together with the adjustable sections, while the tubes 2 are hinged at 3 to the sliding piece 4 movably arranged on the tubular shaft or pin 5. By merely turning the tubes- 2 around the hinges 3 said tubes are brought in line with each other, the sliding piece 4 being then located in corresponding recesses of the tubes 2. Said sliding piece 4 is movable from end to end on the tubular shaft or pin 5 and the arm 1 together with the eyeglasses and adjustable sections is brought into the tubes 2, 2. The adjustable sections are housed within the tubes even when they are in their outermost position. Therefore said adjustable sections need not be moved inwardly before folding the opera-glass, so that after unfolding the latter the parts are still in their previously adjusted position.
Referring to Fig. 4, a is the adjusting pin, 6 a thumb piece and c a tubular interiorly threaded member mounted in the tubular shaft 5 and free to rotate therein. The adjusting screw a is threaded to correspond to the interior threads of the member 0, so that by turning the thumb piece I), the adjusting screw a. may be forced in or out, as desired.
The rigidity of the arm 1 in its horizontal position is secured by links 6 pivoted at one end 7 to the tubes and at the opposite end 8 to said arm 1.
The ends of the opera-glasses herein described may be closed by shutters 9, the form of which corresponds to the section of the tubes, in order to completely close the tubular casing formed by the folded opera-glass. Each shutter 9 is connected by a hinge 10 to the respective tube 2. A rod 11' connected at one end with the link 6 and at the opposite end with a lever 12 fulcrumed at 13 to the tube and connected by a rod 14 with the shutter causes the latter to be closed when the opera-glass is folded and to be opened for uncovering the glasses 16 when the 0pera-glass is unfolded.
In order to enable the rods 14 to extend outwardly the object-glasses 15 are mounted by means of peculiar metal fittings. The glasses 15 are first placed against a rib or projections provided in the interior of the tubes, whereupon the fittings 17 are screwed down. The latter are formed of a ring 18 embracing the outer rim of the glass and an apertured metal disk, through the aperture of which extends the rod 14.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A folding opera-glass, comprising in combination two tubular cases, an interme-' diate adjusting pin, an eye-glass carrier, a member slidably arranged on said pin, hinges between the tubular cases and said slidable member, links pivotally connected to the eye-glass carrier and the inner walls of'the tubular casings, and means for automatically closing and opening the ends of the folded opera-glass, substantially as set forth.
2. A folding opera-glass, comprising in combination two tubular cases, an intermediate adjusting pin, an eye-glass carrier, a member slidably arranged on said pin, hinges between the tubular cases and said slidable member, links pivotally connected to the eye-glass carrier and the inner Walls of the tubular casings, shutters, hinged to the object ends of the tubular cases and suitable connections between said shutters and In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to tlns speclficatlon 1n the presence of two subscrlbmg wltnesses.
