Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS G. SNYDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Exhaust-Mufflers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved muffler for the exhaust of internal combustion engines, and has for its object to provide a muffler which will be efficient in operation, and which may be manufactured at comparatively little expense.
To this end the improved muffler preferably consists of a pan-shaped or discoidal hollow body within the chamber of which are numerous transverse pins on all or on a portion of which are placed loosely coiled springs, the said pan-shaped or discoidal body being provided with inlet and outlet ports for the passage of the products of combustion.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a broken-out view of the improved muffler, and Fig. 2 is a lon itudinal transverse section of the same on line 22, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the body portion 12 of the muffler will preferably consist of a hollow metal part somewhat in the form of a flat or shallow pan, and having short or oppositely arranged inlet and outlet pipes or parts 13. Between the opposing circular walls forming the chamber of the muffler are numerous transverse pins 14 a portion or all of which are encircled by loose coils of wire 15. In the preferred construction of the muffler the pins 14 will be cast integral with a cap or cover part 16 which forms one of the outer walls of the chamber of the muffler, and which cap or cover part, after the wire coils 15 have been placed upon the pins 14, may be riveted or bolted to the body portion 12 of the muffler.
Instead of forming the pins 14 on the cover plate of the muffler they may be formed independently of said plate, as will be understood, and the body of the said muffler may consist of two opposite flat heads or disks bolted to a circular rim portion and in one or both of which heads or disks the pins 15 may be riveted.
While it is preferred to provide the transverse pins in the chamber of the discoidal muffler body with loose coils of wire, it is not necessary that all of the pins should be thus provided with the wire coils, as some may be omitted; and in fact the invention will provide an efficient muffler if the wire coils be omitted altogether and the pins be arranged so thickly as to properly baffle the passage of the exhaust products of com bustion through the chamber of the muffler. The invention will therefore be understood to comprise a discoidal muffler having inlet and outlet ports and provided in the chamber thereof, with any suitable bafiling devices. Also instead of a discoidal form of muffler the transverse pins, either with or Without the loose wire coils, may be applied to oval orother forms of mufflers having somewhat flat bodies enlarged laterally between the inlet and outlet ports of the mufllers.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. An exhaust muffler, for internal com" bustion engines, consisting of a hollow discoidal body having oppositely arranged inlet and outlets ports or passages and provided with numerous pins which are disposed transversely to or across the chamber of the muffler and across the path of movement of the exhausted gases, some or all of said pins being encircled by loose coils of wlre.
2. An exhaust muffler, for internal combustion engines, consisting of a hollow discoidal body closed at one side by a cap or cover part 16 provided with numerous pins 14 extending across the chamber of the muffler and across the path of movement of the exhausted gases, and loose coils of wire encircling said pins.
3.
