UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW J. JACKSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR. OF ONE-TENTH TO NORMAN V. CHRISTENSEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
REGIPBOCATING- ENGINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 30, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. JACKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reciprocating Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to multiple-cylinder engines, and its object is to provide a novel arrangement of cylinders whereby a compact engine is had and one which will take up aminimum amount of space.
WVith this in mind, my invention resides in the features of construction and arrangement to be hereinafter described with respect to the accompanying drawing, in which a vertical longitudinal section through the cylinder of an engine constructed in accordance with my invention is shown.
Referring now to the drawing, the cylinder 1 of my improved engine is formed and arranged to provide longitudinal communicating piston chambers 2 and 3. The cylinder 1 is, as shown, so constructed that its inner and outer chambers, 2 and 3 respectively, are offset from one another in a de gree suflicient to permit the rods 7 and 8 of the pistons 9 and 10 respectively, to pass through and out of the cylinder in juxtaposed relation, the said rod 8 of the outer piston 10 extending through a suitable bearing 11 in the inner piston 9, at one side of its center. The cylinder 1 is also provided with an inlet port 12 leading thereinto between its chambers 2 and 3, from a valve chest 13, in which a valve 14: is movable to alternately uncover inlet port 12 and lap the same and the exhaust port 15. Thus it will be seen that the construction I employ is such as to doaway with all outside connections, by means side connections which are such that each of the moving parts guides the other part.
The cylinders are open at their ends which is especially useful if the invention is applied to i ternal-combustion engines, for the reason that on every inward stroke of the piston fresh air is drawn into the cylinders which helps to cool the same and thus little water cooling is needed. The engine is also reduced to compact form and it will therefore occupy a minimum amount of space.
I claim:
The combination of a cylinder having inner and outer longitudinal piston chambers open at their outer ends, and offset from and communicating with one another, said cylinder also having an inlet port leading thereinto between said chambers, pistons in the respective chambers, one piston having a bearin to one side of its center through which the rod of the other piston passes.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
