To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, Altos L. KNIGHT and l/VILLIAM CLEMENTS, citizens of the United States, and residing at Philadelphia,
, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Molds; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilication, and' to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to the manufacture of what are known as short body type, the latter possessing all the characteristics of ordinary printing type save as to the length of body, which latter is materially shortened, and the addition of means for effecting their retention in 'specially prepared forms or holders for application to addressing and similar'machines; and it has for its principal object the production of a mold, specially contrived and adapted `for use in commercial automatic type casting and composing machines, by means of which said type can be rapidly, accurately and economically produced, and, if desired, set up in justified lines ready for application to the forni or holder with which they are designed to be associated.
To these ends the invention consists in, the construction, combination and arrangement of parts constituting or forming elements of the type mold hereinafter fully described, the novel features whereof are specifically pointed out in theappended claims.

The same numeralsdesignate like parts in the several figures. j' l i The type, Fig. 14, which the mold illustrated is designed tofproduce, comprises a head or character'l accurately formed in justified relation upon one end of the. short rectangular body 2, the opposite sides whereof, corresponding with the top and bottom of the character, contain retaining grooves or channels 3, while the base or foot is recessed part way across from one side, as at et, to furnish a means for determining the set of the character or its position in' the line when assembled, said one side bottom recess serving as a substitute for the 4usual indicating nick whose function in this respect is nullitied by the presence of the opposed retaining groove.
The mold is specially designed for use in automatic casting and composing machines of the type indicated in PatentNo. 625,998, dated May 30, 1899, and is provided with the usual base plate 5, front abutment 6 carrying adjust-able shoe 7, and squaring plate 8 adjustably attached to' base 5 parallel with front abutment G. Corresponding ends of passages 39, 40 are united through a branch 4l and the opposite end-of each is connected by a branch 42 or 43 with a port 44 or 44X adapted to register with a similar port in the base plate for the admissionand discharge of a cooling agent, such as water.
Owin to its motion and concealed position di culty has been experienced in insuring and maintaining proper .lubrication of the jet ejector inthe'cross-bloek, andv to overcome this the following construction has been devised. `The proximate faces of the two 'base sections in contact with the jet ejector are each furnished with a groove 45, preferably diagonally disposed relatively to the line of motion of the ejector blade and extending transversely thereof, and one of said sections is provided with an oil recepta'cle 46 communicating through a passage 47 with a groove or duct 48 located to one side of groove 45. The ejector blade is turnished with a notch or opening 49 adapted to register alternately with duet' 48 and grooves 45. The arrangement is such that when the ejector blade is in its retracted position, to permit the cast to be made, opening 49 will register with duet 48 and receive a supply of oil therefrom, and when the Vblade is reciprocated, to eject the jet, opening 49 will be brought into register with grooves 45 so as to permit the contained supply to flow into said grooves.
The mold as a whole is designed and adapted for use in the type cast-ing machines hereinbefore referred to as a substitute for the full body mold previously employed, but when employed for setting up composed matter the type assembling devices should be modied to correspond with the reduced dimensions of the produced type bodies.
