Description

J. B. OWENS.
- FACING TILE.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 16, 1911.

FACING-TILE.
new and useful Improvements in F acing Tiles, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in facing tiles.
The invention has for one of its ob]ects to provide a tile of this character, the rear sur- 3 face of which shall be formed with means whereby the tile may be rigidly secured in I position upon the application of the same to a wall or other structure.
rear surface of which shall be provided with means whereby lateral displacement of the tile in any direction is prevented after the same has been placed in position, the said rear surface being formed in such a manner as to prevent accumulation of air between the tile and the wall, and to enable the tile to firmly grip the wall.
To these ends the invention contemplates a tile provided upon its rear surface with a holding bar, each end of which is formed to provide a gripping element, each of said gripping elements being substantially inclosed by and spaced from a pair of triangular-shaped gripping members, which latter are formed upon the rear surface of the tile and in longitudinal alinementwith the holding bar; the tile being also provided at each of its longitudinal edges with a positioning bar arranged in parallel relation to the holding bar.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, hereinafter set forth in, and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a portion of this specification; Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a tile constructed in accordance with the resent invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one end of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on the line 4: l of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters designate similar parts throughout the several views, the letter A designates Specification of Letters Patent.

a tile constructed of any suitable or preferred material and provided upon its front surface with the usual facing or coating. The rear surface of the tile A is designated by the numeral 1, and is provided with a plurality of holding bars 2, extending, preferably, longitudinally of the tile, and spaced from each other as shown. These bars 2 are formed integral with the rear surface of the tile and project upwardly therefrom and the outer ones of the bars 2 terminate short of the lateral edges of the tile. At their ends the outer ones of the holding bars 2 are formed to provide gripping elements 3 which latter are substantially V-shaped and are spaced inwardly of the longitudinal A further object of the invention is to; provide a facing tile of this character, the
sides of the bars 2. The longitudinal sides of the bars 2 are beveled downwardly as shown at 4; as are also the side edges of the gripping members 3 as shown at 5. These beveled portions 4 and 5 merge into each other at a point 6 upon the bars incident to the position of the gripping elements 3 thereof.
Adjacent each gripping element 3 of the outer bars 2 is a pair of triangular-shaped gripping members 7. Each one of the members 7 constituting a pair is arranged in parallel relation with the other one of said pair and is provided with downwardly beveled inner and outer sides 8 and 9 respectively which latter merge into the point 10 of the triangle. Each pair of the gripping mem bers 7, it will be seen, substantially inclose a gripping element 3 and the beveled sides of the said gripping members cooperate with the correspondingly formed sides 5 of the elements 3 whereby in the application, of the tile to the wall or other support, these several members will cooperate to securely fasten the tile to its support and prevent accumulation of air bet-ween the rear surface of the tile and the said support.
The central one of the longitudinally arranged bars 2 is shown as extending the full length of the tile and having downwardly beveled longitudinal edges 11 similar to the sides 4 of the outer bars 2. This central bar 2, although shown as extending the full length of the tile, may be also provided with gripping elements similar to the elements 3 of the outer bars, if such is deemed desirable.
At its longitudinal edges and in parallel relation with the bars 2 the rear surface 1 of the tile is formed to provide positioning bars 12 which latter project upwardly from the rear surface 1 and are provided with downwardly inclined inner faces 13, and have inclined upper surfaces 1 merging into the rear surface 1 of the tile. From this construction it will be seen that movement of the tile in any direction, after the same has been applied to its support, is prevented.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A tile provided upon its rear surface with a holding bar, a gripping element formed at each end of said holding bar, pairs of spaced parallel triangular-shaped gripping members formed upon the rear surface of the tile and spaced from said gripping elements, and .a positioning bar formed upon the rear face of the tile at the longitudinal edge thereof and in parallel relation with said holding bar.
2. A tile provided upon its rear surface with a holding bar, gripping elements formed at each end of said holding bar, pairs of triangular-shaped gripping elements formed upon the rear surface of the tile and substantially inclosing said gripping elements and spaced therefrom, and a positioning bar formed upon the rear face of the tile at the longitudinal edges thereof and in parallel relation with said holding bar.
3. A tile provided upon its rear surface with a holding bar, a gripping element formed at each end of said holding bar, and pairs of triangular-shaped gripping members formed upon the rear surface of the tile for cooperation with said gripping elelnents in the application of the tile to a suport.
p 4. A tile provided upon its rear surface with a holding bar, a gripping element formed upon said holding bar, and pairs of triangular shaped gripping members formed upon the rear surface of the tile for cooperation with said gripping element in the application of the tile to a support. Y
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
