CONCRETE-STRUCTURE STIFFENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, lVJLLIAM J. CON- NELL and ALBERT F. DIOKEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Huntington, in the county of Cabell and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Concrete-Structure Stifteners, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to stiffener structures and more particularly to the class of column girder reinforcing medium.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a medium for concrete structures in which a column and girder of concrete will be securely joined and stiffened at the points of juncture thereof, thus obviating possibility of displacement, cracking or breaking of the column and girder and insuring strength to the same.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a medium of this nature in which the tensioning rods in the concrete girders may be fastened in the concrete column joined thereto for the bonding of the same and both of which will be materially stiffened for reinforcing them.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a medium of this character which is simple in construction, reliable and eflicientin its purpose and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings; Figure 1 is a perspective view of a st-ifiener constructed in accordance with the invention and shown applied to a concrete column and two-way girders, the column and girders being shown in dotted lines together with the reinforcing and tensioning rodsvused therein; Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a slight modification of the invention and applied to three-way girders; Fig. 4 is a top plan view thereof; Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a further modification of the invention and applied to four-way girders; Fig. 6 is a top plan view thereof.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the stiffener comprises an L-shaped metallic bar lOthe same being embedded within the vertically disposed concrete column 11, the bar 10 being of any desirable length and has its angular portions 12 dis posed parallel with two sides of the said column, the angular portions 12 medially of their length being formed with outwardly extending wings or extensions 13 provided with reversely outturned cars 14, the wings or extensions 13 projecting into the horizontally disposed concrete girders 15 which are joined to the column 11 in the usual manner, the ears 14 serving as anchors for the wings or extensions 13 embedded within the girders. The wings or extensions 13 are provided with openings 16 which permit the concrete forming the girders 15 to fill in the said perforations 16 for the holding fast of the wings or extensions in the girders. Slidably mounted upon the L-shaped bar 10 and adapted to rest upon the upper edges of the wings or extensions 13 is a square plate 17, the same being provided with an irregular shaped open center 18, the plate 17 being embedded throughout the area in the column 11 and near the corners thereof are formed openings 19 through which project vertical reinforcing rods 20 embedded in the column 11 near the corners of the same, the bar 10 being provided with openings 21 in which are engaged the hook like ends 22 of the truss or tensioning rods 23 embedded in the girders 15 as usual, thus it being seen that the said girders will be securely joined with the vertical column 11 and materially strengthened and stiffened at the points of juncture thereof.
In Figs. 3 and 4 there is shown a slight modification of stiffener wherein a T-shaped bar 24 is embedded centrally within the vertical column 11 and is longitudinally disposed therethrough, the T-shaped bar being of any desirable length and is constructed from metal, the angle portion 25 of the bar 24 being formed with outwardly extending wings or extensions 26 provided with reversely outbent anchoring ears 27, the wings or extensions 26 being embedded in the girders 15 and are provided with openings 28 which permit the setting of the concrete forming the girders 15 for holding fast, the wings or extensions 26 therein. The angular portions 25 of the bar 24 are provided with perforations 29 receiving the hook ends 30 of the truss or tensioning rods 31 embedded in the girders 15 in the ordinary manner. Slidably mounted upon the T-shaped bar 24 is a plate 32, the same resting upon the upper edges of the wings or extensions 26 and is formed with an irregular shaped open center 33 and also provided with the openings 34 receiving the reinforcing rods 35 embedded in the column 11, thus it being seen that the three-way girders 15 will be securely united to the column 11 and both the latter and the said girders will be materially strengthened as will be obvious.
In Figs. 5 and 6 there are shown still further modifications of the invention wherein the stiffener comprises a substantially X- shaped bar 36 the same being embedded centrally in the column 11 longitudinally thereof, the angle portion 38 of said bar having cut therefrom outturned ears 39 provided with perforations 40 through which are passed the reinforcing rods 41 embedded within the said column 11. The angular portion 38 of the bar 36 being provided with the wings 42 indentical to the wings or extensions shown in Figs. 1 to 4 in the drawings and hereinbefore described. Also the angular portions 38 of said bar 36 are provided with the openings 43 receiving the hook terminals 44 of the truss or tensioning bars 45 embedded within the girders 15 which are arranged as four-way girders. It is evident that the column 11 and the girders 15 will be securely connected together and materially stiffened or reinforced at the points of juncture with each other.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and operation of the inven- Wardly projecting wings formed on the bar and adapted to be embedded in the ends of concrete girders joining and at substantially right-angles to such column, reversely outturned anchoring ears on the ends of the wings, and a plate surrounding the bar and resting on the wings and adapted to receive reinforcing rods within such column.
2. In a concrete stiffening medium a bar adapted to be embedded in a column, outwardly projecting wings formed on the bar and adapted to be embedded in the ends of concrete girders joining and at substantially right-angles to such column, reversely outturned anchoring ears on the ends of the wings, a plate surrounding the bar and resting on the Wings and adapted to receive reinforcing rods within such column, the said bar being provided with perforations adapted to receive truss-rods embedded in said girders.
3. In a concrete stiffener a bar of angular contour adapted to be embedded in a column, outwardly projecting wings formed on and extending beyond the free longitudinal edges of said bar and adapted to be embedded in the ends of concrete girders joining and at substantially rightangles to such column, and reversely out-turned anchoring ears on the ends of said wings the said wings being of less depth than said girders and provided with openings for locking engagement in the girders.
