O. THIEME. TRIPPING BLOCK FOR T YPE WRITING MACHINES. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 23, 1910.

'. form-a UNITED STATES PATEN l OTTO THIEME, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR T0 MOON-HOPKINS BILLING MACHINE COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
[DRIPPING-BLOCK FOR TYPE-WRITING MACHINES.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented-Apr. as, rare.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'r'ro THIEME, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tripping- Blocks for Type-Writin g Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ,pf this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a general view illustrating the use of my device 1n connection with an adding machine. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views of my improved tripping block.
The invention relates .to a tripping block, which may be applied to the ordinary rack at the rear of a typewriting machine, and which devicemay be used in connection with .any other device or mechanism to be operated from the carriage of the typewriting machine. r
I have illustrated my device in connection with a combined typewriter and adding machine, but it is perfectly obvious that it may be used in connection with any other machine adapted to cooperate with the typewriting mechanism.
Referring to the drawings, 1- indicates generally the carriage of the typewriting machine having a rack 2 attached to the rear thereof. i
3 indicates generally the mechanism of an adding machine, the details of which are not necessary to an understanding of m present improvement. I shall, therefore, only refer generally to a few of the elements illustrated, which are placed in actuation by means of my improved tripping device.
4 designates a set of accumulators mounted on a laterally movable bar 5 having projections 6 at intervals outside thereof.
7 is a bar having a member with a catch to engage the projection 6 on the rod 5. This member 7 is bent at right angles to pivotal support 8 for a pivoted pawl 9 bearing normally against pin 10 on the member 7. A spring 11 tends to hold the pawl 9 in engagement with the pin 10.
- It is desired at certain points in the travel of the carriage of the typewriter to move the bar 7 laterally away from the projection 6, allowing the bar 5 to move longitudinally with the accumulators thereon. For
the accomplishment of this function Ihave rack 2. This block is comprised of a ody' portion 12 having extenslons or wings 13 and 14 with flanges 15 and 16 to surround the body of the rack bar 2.
Pivoted-at 17 to the body portion 12 is a latch 18 shaped as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, with 'an inclined face 19, and a projecting portion 20 having a catch portion 21 adaptgd to engage betweenthe teeth 'on the rack A compression spring 22 is mounted in an opening in the wing portion 13 and engages the bottom of the latch 18 to hold the block with the catch portion 21 in engagement with the teeth of the rack. When it is desired to shift the position of the tripping the teeth of the block and the tripping-block may be shifted laterally on the rack bar 2 to a new position.
It is, of course, clear that as the carriage moves laterally the latch on the tripping block 18 will become engaged with the inclined surface on the pawl 9 to shift the member 7 laterally, allowing of the longi' tudinal movement of the bar 5, as already referred to.
I am aware that minor changes may be made in the construction, arrangement and combination of the elements of my device without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is indicated in the accompanying claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the
ed Within said slot' and provided with a latching portion adapted to cooperate with said teeth, a movable member and an engaging portion arranged upon said latch member in such manner as to contact with the Copies of this patent may he obtained for five cents each, by addressing the movable member to force said latch member against said rack bar.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my signature in the presence of two witnesses, this 12th day of September, -1910.
OTTO THLEME.
