To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILHEIM KLEME'T, a subject of the German Emperor, and residing at Neu-Finkenkrug-Falkenhain, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to lamp-holders comprising a cylindrical or prismatic base for electric incandescent lamps.
Among the objects of my invention are to provide a lamp holder in which the connecting terminals are readily accessible and one which is of simple construction. To these ends, I provide an incandescent lampholder comprising a cylindrical or prismatic base'over which the shield is arranged axially displaceable, so that only afterthe lamp has been screwed out are the holes provided for examining the conductors in the base liberated, a ring screwed on the holder preventing the shield falling oil.
Some illustrative embodiments of my invention are represented by way of example in the accompanying drawings, where Figure l is. a vertical section showing one form of my improved'lamp-holder comprising an Edison screw socket, Fig. 2 is a like view showing a modified form comprising Swan bayonet contacts, and Fig. 3 is a like view showing another form comprising a modified form of the base; Fig. 4 is a crosssection taken on the line 'A-B in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is an elevation showing a lampholder base having rectilinear grooves and Fig. 6 is a like view of a base having spiral grooves, and Figs. 7 to 10 are elevations showing various forms of axially displaceable shields.
Referring to the drawings, the lampholder base a (Figs. 1 to 3) carries within it the terminals k for the connection of the conductors 8 introduced through a central bore 0. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a nipple n for connection to a pipe may be provided in this central bore 0. When flexible cords are employed the suspension cord will be connected within the base with a relieving device 2', as clearly shown in Fig. 3.

accessible through transverse bores g from base a, covers over the lateral bores as well as the contact pieces of the lamp-holder and lamp in its normal position in use. may be formed either as a simple protective shield or as a shade, globe or ornamental reflector. Further, its lower edge may be of small diameter and rest in known manner on the lamp.
The shield d and the base a are preferably prevented from rotating relatively to one another in order that only the shield 03 need be held when inserting the incandescent lamp. According to my invention this end is attained in a simple manner by means of the prismatic form of the base a or by means of grooves k and projections 9 distributed'over the periphery of the shield and base, the grooves being either rectilinear and parallel with the axis of the lampholder, as shown in Fig. 5, or in the form of as steep spiral turns as possible, as shown in Fig. 6. Each groove h is bounded at its upper end by a stop 7' for preventing the shield 03 being removed upward.
For'employing incandescentlamps having Swan bayonet caps the base a is preferably lowered so far that the terminals is are exposed. An additional advantage of the form shown in'Fig. 3 is that after the shield (Z has been pushed back the ends of the conductors s are also exposed.

The adjustability of the shield d axially on the base a is of special advantage when the shield is formed as a reflector, as shown in 8 and 10, because the reflective action most favorable for the incandescent lamp employed can thereby be obtained.
I claim 1. The combination with a lamp; ofa lamp holder base having a central axial bore opening into chambers opening out of apertures in the side of the base, terminals in said chambers and a shield axially displace. able alon the base and supported in normal positlon thereon by said lamp.
2. The combination with a lamp, of a lamp holder base having a central axial bore opening into chambers opening out of aper tures .in the side of the base, terminals in said chambers and a shield axially and nonrotatably displaoeable along the base and supported in normal position thereon by said lamp.
' 3. The combination ofa lamp-holder base having a central axial bore opening into chambers opening out of apertures in'the side of the base, terminals in said chambers,-
and a shield axially displaceable along the base, said base having a screw-threaded bottom part, and a ring screwed on the bottom part for preventing the said shield being remov d from the same.

T e combination of a lamp-holder base having a central axial bore opening into chambers opening out of apertures in the side of the base, terminals in said chambers, and. a shield axially'and non-rotatably displaceable along the base, said base having a screw-threaded bottom part, and a ring screwed on the bottom part for preventing the said shield being removed from the saine. 5. The combination of a lamp-holder base having a central axial bore opening into chambers opening out of apertures in the sideof the base, terminals insaid chambers, said. base having grooves in the periphery thereof, a shield having rejections en'ter= ing into said grooves disp aceable along the base, said base having ascrew-threaded, downwardly projecting bottom part, a ring screwed on the bottom part for preventing the said shield being removed therefrom, and a lamp detachably carried by the bottom part, said shield normally resting on the lamp andcovering the said apertures in the base.
6. The combination of a lamp-holder base having a central axial bore opening into chambers opening out of apertures in the side of the base, terminals in said chambers, said base having grooves in the periphery thereof, terminating before the top end thereof and running mt at the bottom end thereof, a shield having rejections entering into said grooves disp aceable along the base, said base having a screw-threaded downwardly projecting bottom part, a ring screwed on the bottom part for preventing the said shield being removed therefrom,
and a lamp detachably carried by the bottom part, said shield normally resting on the lamp and covering the said apertures in the base.
