In the present instance, for the sake of a clear and deinite description of my invention, I have illustrated and wlll hereinafter describe my invention as embodied 1n an. adding machine ofthe Burroughs type, 'but it will be'understood that my invention is not restricted in its application or scope -to suoli particular machine, but that it may be employed 1nconnectionv with machinesv of the same general character and used for the same general purposes.

The main .operating shaft of the machine, to which ower is applied, usually by means of a suita le handle, 1s the rock shaft SOO-shown in Fig; 1; and thev ordinary 0peration of the machine consists in' depressing or setting the proper number or value,- keys 291 and then yrocking said shaft for- Ward and backward through its limit of movement. Whenon'e of the keys 291, in any given denominational row, is depressed or set, and the rock shaft 300 rocked for- Ward, the rack 610 carried by the lever 611 corresponding to suoli row of keys will be released and permitted to drop downward a distance measured by the value of the operated key; and when the rock shaft is rocked backward to normal position the rack will be lifted to its normal position again and theoperated key be released.
By engaging the pinions 916 of the adding wheels with the rack 610 during the movement of the latter in one direct-ion, and holding themlout of engagement therewith during their 'movement in the opposite direction, the values of the operated keys may beV added upon said Wheels. In the Burroughs machine the adding Wheel pinions, While normally engaged with rthe racks,

. AHaving now described the usual operation of taking totals and sub-totals upon the Burroughs machine, and the parts concerned in such operations, I will roceed to an explanation of the, means w ich I have provided for automatically taking a total by a mere blank or extra handle:

Near the end of the forward movement of the operating handle and the rock shaft, and rearward movement of the arm 813, the pin or stud u on the latter will engage the rear end of t e slot in the link 918 and draw the latter slightly rear- Ward, thereby rocking the shaft 904 and swinging the stud l655, Figs. 1 and 3, upward and forward a ainst the beveled proarm 628, to lift the atter an disengage its hooked forward end from the stud 656 upon the swinging bail whose stud 657 eoperates with the lever 627. At the end of the forward movement of the operating handle and rock shaft 300, therefore, the latch 628 is disengaged from the stud 656, so that if not otherwise restrained the swinging bail would be pulled forward from the position shown in Fig. 3 by its yspring v482, and the hooked rear end .of the lever 627 permitted to rengage the stud 663 upon thebell crank 626. But under -the conditions shown in Fig. 3, where one orvmore o f the keys 291 is depressed, the swinging bail carrying the stud 657 is held rearward by the downwardly bent front ends of 011e or more of the sliding plates 204 engaging the cross rods 402 of said bail; and inasmuch as the depressed keys are 'not released in the Burroughs machine until the operating handle and connected parts have returned a considerable distance toward normal position, the latch 628 will be permitted to rengage the stud 656 (owing to the character of the slot and pin v"connection of the link 918 with the arm 913, Fig. 2,) before the depressed or set keys are released., The result will be that, while the latch 628 is lifted at each operation of the machine,-its movement is an idle one so long as any of the keys 291 are depressed,`
since it rengages the stud l656 upon the bail before the fatter is released bythe de` pressed keys. At the first blank or spacing stroke taken, however, the bail lbeing then free from the restraint imposed by any depressed keys, and being held in rearward position solely by the latch 628, the lifting of the latter will release the bail and permit its spring 482 to pull it. forward to normal position, and cause its stud 657 torelease-the lever 627 and permit the hooked rear end of the latter to engage the stud vupon the bell crank 626; and upon the next or second blank stroke the parts will be swung to the position shown in Fig. 4, and the shaft 204 be rocked to swing down the forwardlyV projecting arm of the bell crank 227, and, through the medium of the depending link 911, to depress the front end of the arm' 914 and disengage the notch in its arm 914* from the stud 958, and thereby permit the adding wheel pinions to remain 1n mesh wit-h the racks during the descent of the latter, for the taking of a total; and as the parts will be held in their moved osition, with the arm 914 depressed, unti the operating handle and rock shaft 300 have completed their forward stroke and returned nearly to normal position, owing to the travel of theroller 634 upon' the concentric surface of the cam plate 311, Fig. 4, the adding wheel frame will be rocked forward at the beginning of the return movement of the operatinghandle and rock shaft, by the engagement of the lower hooked end of the arm 914b with the stud 958, and the adding wheel pinions be thereby held out of engagement with the racks during the return of the latter to normal position, and the machine thereby cleared.
The lower ends of the two arms 227R and 227L depending from the rock shaft 204 are connected by' forwardly extending links 216 with a cross rod 209 cooperating with the latches 415 which normally hold the racks 610 in elevated position; so that whenever the arms 227 n and 227L are swung rearward in the manner above explained, for the taking of a total, all of the latches 415 are likewise swung rearward and disengaged from the racks, and all of the latter permitted to drop until their 'respective adding wheels have turned backward to zero position.4

In the automatic taking of a total in the manner and by the means above described the machine is cleared, that is to say, the adding wheels are left at zero owing to the fact that`their pinions are disengaged from the racks 610 prior to the return upward movement of the latter; but for the purpose of enabling a Vtotal to be taken without' clearing the machine I provide-*means for preventing such disengagement of Itheduiding wheel pinions from the racks, so that they may remain in engagement therewith during the return upward movement of the racks and be thereby turned forward again to the respective' positions -occupiedby them before the takingoliv the total. In an adding machine, the combination, with the accumulating, totalizin and printing mechanisms thereof and Wit the key mechanism and the key-restoring mechanism of the machine, of means automatically actuated for operating the totalizing mechanism, and means nndcr the control of the operator cooperating with the accumulating mechanism for preventing a ,clearing thereof but permitting a sub-total to be printed when suoli totalizing mechanism is operated, such latter means comprising a key having a stem arranged to interfere with the normal operation of the nccunmlating mechanism, a pivoted detent 1o which is arranged to engage and detain the key stem when operated, and an arm or pawl under the control of the key-restoring mechanism and arranged to cooperate with and release the detent when such latter mechanism is actuated, a spring cooperating with the detent to hold it against the key `stem which is notched to receive the detent when the hej' stem is depressed, and an arm or paivl under the control of the key-restoring mechanism and arranged to cooperate with and release the detent when such latter mechanism is operated.

In an adding machine, the combination, with the accumulating, totalizing and printing mechanisms thereof and with the key mechanism and the key-restoring mechanism of the machine, of means automatically actuated for operating the totalizing mechanism, and means under the control of the operator cooperating with the accumulating mecha ism for preventing a clearing thereof but permitting a sub-total to be rinted when such totalizing mechanism 1s operated, such latter means comprisin a 85 key having a stem arranged to inter ere with the normal operation of the accumulat ing mechanism, a pivoted detent which is arranged to engage and detain the key stem when operated, and an arm or pawl under the control of the key-restoring mechanism and arranged to cooperate with and release the detent when such latter mechanism is actuated, zu spring coperating with the def -tent to hold it in position to engage the key stem `When operated, and a spring pressed arm or pawl under the control of the key-restoring mechanism and arranged to coperate with and release the detent when such latter mechanism is operated.
66. In a. 'machine of` the character described, the ycombination h vith the accumulating mechanism and its controllin nectio'ns adjustable for either itemizmg or COD totalizing operations of said mechanism, of
' means operating to adjust said connections fora totalizing operation, with provisions for disabling said means by the act of preparing the machine for accumulating an item and also provisions for maintaining the disablement between item accumulating operations.
67. -In a machine of the character described, the Acombination with setting up devices, accumulatinfY mechanism and controlling connections ihr the latter adjustable to bring about either itemizing or totalizing operations of said mechanism; of means operating to adjust said connections for a totalizing operation, with provisions for disabling said means by the setting up devices and for maintaining the said means disabled between itemizing operations.

In a machine of the character described, the combination with the accumu lating mechanism and its controlling connections adjustable for either itemizing or totalizing operations of said mechanism, actuating means, of means operating to adjust said connections for a totalizing operation, with provisions for disabling said means by the act of setting the accnmnlating mechanism and also provisions for maintaining the disablemcnt between item accumulating operations; together with means for renabling said means in an operation of the actuating means Without a settin of the accumulating mechanism.
69. n a machine of the character dcscribed, the combination with setting up devices, accumulati mechanism, and controlling connections or the latter adjustable to bring about either itemizing or totalizing operations of said mechanism; and actuating means, of means operating to adjust sald connections for a totalizing opera tion, with provisions for disabling said means by the setting up devices and for maintaining the said means disabled between itemizing operations; together with means for renabling said means whenever the actuating means are operated independently of the setting-up devices.
