7 is. the strap bolt, forming the securing means, this bolt extending downwardly through the end of the overhung extension around and underneath the box, and having at its lower end a head 8 to entera recess in the side frame. The upper end of the bolt is threaded at 9 to receive a holding nut 10. i
11 is a retainer, integral with the box,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT O. -BUOKIUS, Jr., of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in J ournal-Box- Securing Mechanism, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which A Figure 1 is a side elevation showing. a portion of a truck side frame and journal box provided with my improved fastening device; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the ournal box.
My invention relates to the securing of journal boxes to side frames by retainers the. patent to J. J. Byers, No. 996,000, dated June 20th, 1911. In the structure shown in that pat-- cut, the bolt is threaded through an eye or holder at the bottom of the journal box. With such holders, it' will be necessary, in removing the journal box,.to jack up the side frame until the upper end of the securing device is below the ledge of the side frame over the journal box. As this distance is several inches, the device of said patent is somewhat objectionable, and my invention is designedto overcome this di ficulty and reduce the requisite amount of jacking up in order to remove the journal box or insert a new one.
To that end, the
which is preferably cast andis of hook-like lower horizontal portion of the bolt or securing device may be tainer. The box is preferably grooved aroundits intermediate and lower portions to receive the securing bolt, this groove 12 projecting inwardly of the box, as shown in Fig. 2. The overhanging ledge portion 3 of theside frame is preferably provided with a depending lip or rib 3 at its outer end, which forms between it and the inner vertical bearing face arecess to receivethe upper part of the box.. .This relieves shearing strain. I
The portio-n of the side frame having the vertical bearing face is provided with a recess 13,.preferably cast therein, this re cess being open at the bottom and side, and being of suflicient size to receive the head of the securing bolt and of suflicient height to allow the bolt to be pushed up and drawn tightwhen the box is in position.
In assembling the parts, the box is put in place, the securing bolt is pushed up through the hole in the overhanging ledge, and its horizontal portion is then swung around into the retainer, its head then being beneath or partially within the receiving recess. The bolt is then pushed up into the groove in the box, its head moving up within the receiving recess, and the nut is then tightened to hold the box securely in lace.
If the nut works off or becomes loose, the securing bolt can only drop down until it strikes on the retainer hook, which prevents it from dropping out, as the head at this time cannot move sidewise from the receiving recess. If the depending lip or rib on the overhang of the side frame is one inch in depth, and the retainer opening is one invention consists in providing the journal box with a retainer having a side opening through which the securing device may be inserted without threading the same endwise through the retainer. 7
The invention also consists in arranging a recess for the head of the bolt or securing device, which is open at the side and bot tom and will allow the head to be moved upwardly within the recess after the re taining device has been moved sidewise into the retainer of the journal box.
In the drawings, 2 represents a portion of the side-frame of a car truck, having at the end an overhung extension 3 to receive and rest on the journal box a. The lower preferably horiof the box, and the end has a vertical bearing face 6 at substantially right angles to the bearing face 5, the box fitting in the angle between these two faces. l
zontal to lit the top of the 'side frame recess and can only drop an inch if the nut form, being open at one side, so that the swung into thisre- 1 the bolt. from any a lateral opening to allow, admission of the on in Letters Patent No. 023,809.
is loosened or lost. Consequently, the bolt- Will still hold the box in place, even if the nut is lost off from it.
The advantages of my invention result 5 from the fact that the parts may be assembled and secured in place, and may also be removed and replaced Without excessive jacking up of the side frame. The side frame only needs to be jacked up until the upper end of the box drops below the rib of the overhang, When the bolt can then be dropped down onto the retaining hook and swung out to release the box. v I
Many changes ma be made in the form and arrangement of box, the side frame, the securing device, the retainer, ize, with out departing from my invention;
I claim 1. A journal has for lcar axles having a retainer at its loWer portion provided with a side opening to receive a securing deve, said retainer being arranged to preventdropping away of the securing device; sub
stantially as described;
2. A journal box for car axleahaving a groove or recess to receive securing do overhang portion with a depending rib, a journal box seated in the recess inside the rib and having a retainer with a lateral vice, said box having in its lower portion a retainer open at the side to receive the see curing device, said retainer being arranged to prevent dropping away of said securing device; substantially as described.
3. A journal box for car axles having formed as a part thereof a retainer to receive a securing device, said retainer having securing device Without threading, said retamer being arranged to prevent dropping away of the securing device; substantially as described. 7
co ies of this patent ma be obtained. for
record of the ease in the Patent Ofiice.
Correct 4:: in a car truck, a side frame having a seat for journal box opened at the bottom and side, a journal box having a retainer With lat all ojpening, and a securing bolt or strap extending through the retainer and securing the box to the side frame; substantially as described.
5. In a car truck, a side frame having a overhung end portion open at the side and bottom, a journal box seated in the opening and-having a laterally open retainer, and a securing boltextending through the retainer and having a head positioned in a recess or side frame, said recess extending upwardly above the opening in the retainer; substantially as described. I
7. 111 a car truck, a side frame havlng an opening, and a securing bolt or strap extending through the retainer; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have nereunto set my hand.
