To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN P. FoRTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in .TypelVriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to mechanism for back spacing the carriage of a typewriting machine by means of a key or similar device, so that upon each operation of the key the carriage may be moved back a definite distance, ordinarily a single space, and thereupon be arrested. In mechanism of this class, there is ordinarily provided a dog which is normally disengaged from the carriage rack but which, when the back spacing key is operated, first moves into engagement with the rack and then moves back with the rack a single space. Stops, also actuated from the key, are usually provided for engaging the rack from above when the key is operated to prevent the rack from riding over the dog and thus being overthrown by reason of the momentum of the carriage; and for holding the escapement wheel against movement during the back spacing operation.
One object of the present invention is a simplified means for actuating the back spacing dog, to the end that a single element may effect both the rack-engaging. movement of the dog and the movementof the dog with the carriage.
Another object of the invention is the elimination of unnecessary parts by operating the stop which prevents displacement and overthrow of the carriage, and the stop which prevents movement of the escapement wheel, both from a single element, preferably the element which directly actuates the dog, so that these stops are brought to effective position at the proper time.
The invention in general has for its object to simplify and render more certain and positive the operation of mechanism of this class. r
The above and other specific objects and features of the invention will presently and more fully appear in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a view in perspective of so much of the mechanism of the typewriting machine as relates to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view in front elevation of .the mechanism which is operated from the back spacing key, the parts being shown 1n normal position. Flg. 3 is a view of the parts shown in Fig. 2 at the'end of the back spacing movement, before the key is released. Fig. 1 is a view similar to Fig.2 with the parts in the position assumed when the back spacing dog has been broughtto the rack, but before the dog has been moved back with the rack. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view showing more clearly the means by which the stops for the rack and escapement wheel are operated.
The carriage of the typewriter includes a rack'which is indicated at 1. This rack is supported on arms 2 pivoted at 3 to the frame pf the carriage .in a well known manner. One of the arms 2 is extended beyond the pivot to form a release key lev'er at for swinging the rack upward by means of the arms 2 to disenga ge. the rack from the pinion 5 which forms part of the 'escapement mechanism. The carriage is driven from the usual spring drum by means of a strap connection. The usual escapement wheel 6 and dog 6 control the step-by-step or letter feed movement, of the carriage. The pinion 5 which normally engages the rack, is loosely mounted on the stud 5 to which the escapement wheel is fixed. A pawl 7 pivotally attached to the face of the escapement wheel 6 is held against the pinion 5 by means of a spring 8, in such manner that the pinion is locked to the escapement Wheel to be controlled by the latter during the advance movement of the carriage. During the back spacing movement of the carriage rack, how'- ever, the teeth of the pinion pass idly over riage is back spaced by means of a dog 9 operated from a back spacing key 10, on a key lever 11, pivoted at 12 to the frame A.
The lever 11 connects, by means of a link 13, with the arm 14 of'a lever pivoted at 15 to a bracket 22 on the frame. The lever pivoted at 15 has an arm 16 which extends vertically and is then ofi-set horizontally, and at its end engages by means of slot 17, a pin 17 in a lever 18. Thelever 18 is pivoted at 19 to a bracket 20, which in turn is secured at 21 on the bracket 22 of the frame. The bracket 20 has an arm 23 (see Fig. 5) carrying a stud 24 which forms an attachment Mo Fi m] for the dog to the. rocker. During this bodily shift of the dog 9, pin 17, by engagementwith the cam 34 of the lever 2633, rocks that lever against the action of the spring 37 until the detent- 27 engages the rack 1 and the detent 28 engages escapement wheel 6. \Vhen the detent 27 engages the rack, further movement of the lever 26-33 is impossible. The movement of the rocker is stopped by the frame. The throw .of the dog with the rack is stopped by the pin 24 on the rocker engaging the end wall of the slot 25. The rack is locked between the dog and the detent 27 and therefore cannot be overthrown. On release of the key, the spring 86 returns the key lever system and the rocker; and the spring 37 returns the stop lever 26-33, as heretofore described. I
'Ihe structure shown and described is capable of considerable modification within the scope of the inventihn. Portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim-z 1. lln a typewrit-ing machine, a carriage, a rack on the carriage, escapement mechanism cooperating with the rack to control the feed of the carriage, a dog movable into and out of engagement with the rack and movable with the rack to back space the same, a lever having a cam thereon for moving the dog into engagement with the rack, means for operating the lever, and means on the lever for moving the dog with the rack when the dog and rack are in engagement.

In a typewriting machine, a carriage, a rack on the carriage, escapement mechaqnism cooperating with the rack to control the feed of the carriage, a dog movable into and out of engagement with the rack and movable with the rack to back space the same, a lever carrying a stop, a cam on said stop lever whereby the stop lever is actuated to bring the stop into engagement with the rack to prevent movement of the rack away from the dog, a' lever for actl'iating the dog, a cam on said dog actuating lever to move the dog into engagement with the rack, and a pin on said dog actuating lever for engaging the cam on the stop lover to actuate the latter.

In a typewriting machine, a carriage, a rack on the carriage, escapement mechanism cooperating with the rack to control the feed of the carriage, a dog movable into and out of engagement with the rack and inoinble with the rack to back space the same, said dog being mounted to swing on its support into and out of engagement with. the rack and toniove longitudinally on its support with the rack, a lever carrying a cam to swing the dog and a detcnt to shift the dog longitudinally, a lever carrying a stop movable into engagement with the rack to prevent shifting the rack away from the dog, and a cam on said stop lever engaged by said clog actuating lever, said -lastnamed cam acting, during the longitudinal shift of the dog, to bring the stop to the rack.

In a typewriting machine, a carriage, a rack on the carriage, escapement mechanism cooperating with the rack to control the feed of the carriage, a dog movable into and out of engagement with the rack and movable with the rack to backspace the same, a lever arm carrying a stop, and a cam for moving said lever arm to bring the stop into engagement with the escapement mechanism, to prevent back movement of the latter, and a lever engaging said dog and said stop arm cam for actuating the same.

In a typewriting machine, a carriage, a rack on the carriage, escapement mechanism cooperating with the rackto control the feed of the carriage, a (log movable into and out of engagement with the rack and movable with the rack same, a lever carrying a stop, a cam on said to back space the stop lever whereby the stop lever is actuated to bring the stop into engagement with the rack to prevent. movement of the rack away from the dog, a lever for actuating the dog, a cam on said dog actuating lever to move the dog into engagement with the rack, and a pin on said dog actuating lever for engaging the cam on the stop lever to actuate the latter; said'stop lever carrying a second stop to engage the. escapement mechanism when said lever is'actu'ated.

In a typevvriting machine, a carriage, a rack on the carriage, escapement mechanism cooperating With the rack to control the feed of the carriage, a dog movable into and out of engagement with the rack and movable with the rack to back space the same, a lever for operating the dog, a stop arm for preventing movement of the rack away from the dog, and a spring connecting the stop arm and dog actuating lever to return the stop arm to normal position.

In a typewriting machine, a carriage, a rack on the carriage, escapement mechanism cooperating with the rack to control the feed of the carriage, a dog movable into and out of engagement with the rack and movable With the rack to back space the same, a lever for operating the dog, a stop arm for holding the escapement mechanism, and a spring connecting the stop arm and dog actuating lever to return the stop arm to normal position.
