Be it known that I, CHARLES M. SINGLAIR, citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to door locks and latches, and more particularly to the construction utilized in doors of the fire-proof construction, and has for its object to provide a bolt which is intended to disappear within a stile of the door when the door is to be opened, said bolt being held in that position during the interval that the door is in opened position.
Another object of my invention is to provide a plurality of disappearing' bolts coupled to one another so that the manipulation of one will cause all of the bolts to move in unison.
Another object of my invention is to provide a latch for swinging doors which is adapted to operate when the door is closed and the operation thereof is caused by gravitation.
Further objects will be apparent from the following specification, appended claim and drawings thereof, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the stiles of abutting doors, the operative parts being shown in elevation. Fi 2 is a vertical sectional view therethrough as on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view as on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, there are shown the abutting stiles of doors A and B and within the stiles of the door A is a casing C within which are the operating parts of the door A. lWithin the casing C and secured to the walls thereof are the brackets 1() which are composed of two yoke members, one fitting within the other and a space between the bights of the two members in which space is adapted to slide a vertically slidable bar 11 which is provided with the slots 12 which receive the pins 13 carried by the yokes 10, said pins and slots limiting the movement of the bar 11. Secured to the bar at intervals are the brackets 14, the ends of which being secured to the bar as at 15 and passing through the brackets 14 and the bar 11 are the bolts 16 which serve as fulcrums for the bolts 17 which pass through openings 18 in the oas` .mg C and the stile of the door A. The inner ends of the bolts 17 are pivotally connected to a bar 19 as at 20, the bar 19 causing the several bolts 17 to move in unison so that when one bolt is drawn into the casing, all of the bolts will move likewise. The doors A and B are provided with the usual knobs 21 connected by the squared shank 22 which squared shank in the door A is adapted to pass through the rocker 23 which has the arms 24 extending therefrom and which arms are adapted to engage pins 25 carried by a plat-e 26 which is also secured to the bar 11 as at 27.
The plate 26 is provided with a slot 28 to permit vertical movement of the plate 26 and bar 11. The upper end of the bar 11 carries a lug 29 which when the bar is raised engages a lug 30 carried bv a wall of the casing, the bar having sufficient resiliency to permit the lug 29 to pass the lug 30 in the upward and downward movement of the bar 11, and to release the lug 29 from the lug 30 as the door is closed secured to the frame of the door-way passes through an opening 32 in the stile of the door A and the casing C and pushes the lug 29 free of the lug 30 so the bar 11 drops by gravity.
The stile of the door B is provided with the vertically slidable bars 33 and 34, bar 33 being considerably heavier than the bar 34 so that normally the bolts 35 and 36 will assume extended positions by means of the rocker 37 which is carried by the squared shank 38 of the door knobs 39 of the door B. The bars 33 and 34 are guided in their vertical movement by the brackets 40 which are secured to the walls of the stile of the door and to keep the bolts 35 and 36 within the stiles of the door when the door is open, that is to overcome the effect of gravitation on the bars 33 and 34 I provide a notch 41 which is intended to engage the bracket 42 carried by the door when the bolts are drawn into the stile of the door and to release the bar 34 from the bracket 42 I pro vide a trip 43 similar in construction to the trip 31 which trip passes through an opening in the stile of the door and forces the bar 34 from engagement with the bracket 42.
The operation of the device is as fola trip 31 which is lows r-Rotation of the knobs 21 causes the shank 22 to move the rocker in either direction and one of the arms 24 of the rocker will engage one of the pins 25 carried by the plate 26 which in turn raises the bar 11, which bar 11 will raise the fulcrum of the bolt 17 and the edge of the bolt contacting with the upper wall of the openings 18 causes the bolt 17 to swing and move within the casing C. rl`he bolts will normally move in unison by the movement of the bar 11 and the openings 18 but to assure the extension of the bolts upon return of the bar 11 to its lower position I provide a bar 19 which is pivotally connected to each of the bolts 17. When the bar 11 is raised and the door open the lug 29 engages the lug 30 and retains the bar 11 in raised position. By rotation of the knobs 39 the shank 38 moves the rocker 37 so as to raise the bar 33 and lower the bar 34 which draws the bolts 35 and 36 within the stile of the door and when said door is opened sufficiently far the notch 41 engages the bracket 42 carried by the door which overcomes gravitation and keeps the bars 33 and 34 in said position until the door is again closed so as to cause the trip 43 to disengage the recess 41 from the bracket 42.
I do not limit myself to the construction shown in the drawings as numerous modifications may be made within the scope of the following claim.
In a door lock, a vertically movable bar, a plurality of bolts fulcrumed thereon, said bolts passing through openings in the stile of al door, a second vertically movable bar carried by the inner ends of said bolts, said bar causing the bolts to assume a horizontal position when said first-mentioned bar is lowered, a lng carried by the door, a lug carried by the vertically movable bar engaging said lug carried by the door when said door is open and a trip carried by the casing of the door adapted to disengage said lugs from one another when said door is closed.
