LAST AND LAST-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 2, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS RENDLE, of the city of Ottawa, in the county of Lasalle and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lasts and Last- Supports, and relative to my Patents No. 804,503, dated November 14, 1905, and No. 859,892, dated July 9, 1907, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to jacks for shoemakers use on hand work, and the object is to provide means by which one last can be locked (or set) transversely for all necessary shapes. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the two part last, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the entire jack. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the fore part of the last, and Fig. 4 is a section through the socket portion of the fore-part of the last. Fig. 5 is a side view of the spindle, Fig. 6 is a top view of the spindle.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The rigid support a is provided at the upper part with a round tapering spindle 2' comprising three straight V-shaped grooves 2' on each side. The fore-part f is provided with a round tapering socket it having a straight V-shaped ridge if on each side, whereby the fore-part f may be rigidly held in different positions. A spring 9 connects the support I) with the latch (Z, whereby the latch pin is may be held engaged with one of the ratchet teeth of the lever a, and the said support I) started back to a contracted position upon disengaging the said latch pin is and raising the lever c.
The operation is as follows: Each part of the last, is placed upon its spindle in proper position for the shoe, to be operated upon, the jack being in a closed position to allow the shoe to go on and off easily. WVhen the shoe is on the lever is lowered to expand the jack, and held by the latch until released by the operator.
I claim The combination with a last support, of a last member having a circular socket to cooperate with the support, said socket having on each side a V-shaped ridge and said support having a set of V-shaped grooves for cooperation with each ridge, whereby the last member may be securely held in different positions, substantially as described.
