Letters Patent No. 102,376, dated April. 26, 1870.
IMPROVED COAL-BARROW.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it 'nmy concern:
Be it known that I, PETER K. DEDERICK, of Al bany, in the county of Albany and State-New York,
' aneingthe weight at all times, even when dumping or discharging. I
In the accompanying drawings-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my barrow in the position it stands when loaded.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the barrow when tilted or dumped, which is accomplished by simply raising the handles.
1n the construction of my barrow, the body B may be made of either wood or sheet-iron, and of scoopform, and, instead of elevating the body entirely over the periphery of the wheels, thus throwing the entire load a long distance oneside of the center, as in all barrows in use, I use larger wheels, as 0, shown, and drop the body of the barrow between the wheels, and low enough to balance or nearly balance the load and also to maintain the balance when being discharged.
The barrow is moved by handles 1), and discharged by elevating said handles D.
In filling, the barrow may be pushed up to the pile of coal scoopashion, and then partially filled in that position, when the handles are pressed down, so that the guards or legs-E rest on the ground, when the filling is completed.
In discharging from an elevation, the fact of the load being thus balanced between the wheels permits the operator to handle a much larger load without being overbalanced, as would be the case with the body located over the wheels.
One man cannot safely handle five hundred pounds in a common barrow, while with my barrow'one thousand pounds may be handled, or all that the operator can wheel, as the load is so nearly balanced that all that is required is the power to move or push it forward.
A stationary bale, F, is also attached, for the purpose of lowering and hoisting the barrow and load from boats, thus saving the expense and ordinary breakage or waste by dumping from tubs, as the barrows are hoisted out and wheeled'to any desired point,
Having thus described my invention,
I claim- 1. The scoop-form of the body B, suspended between the wheels of the barrow, substantially for the purpose set forth.
2. The bale I or its equivalent, in connection with the body B, suspended as described.
PETER K. DEDERIOK.
