BED-SPRING.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SHELDON C. CHAT- HAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadel phia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Springs, of which the following is a specification.

. This invention relates to spring mattresses and more particularly to novel means for adjusting the frame of the mattress longitudinally, to take up the slack in the spring mattress caused by wear.

An important object of this invention is to provide novel means for adjusting the frame longitudinally and novel means for locking the frame in its adjusted positions.

A further object of this invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is cheap to manufacture, simple in construction, and durable.

Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of my improved spring mattress, Fig. 2, is a side view of the same, Fig. 3 is. a perspective view of a looking device, Fig. 4 is an enlarged section through the rotatable rod, showing means for moving the same, and, Fig. 5 is a side view of a modified form of extensible frame.

In the drawings wherein is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a bed bottom fabric, which is attached to the springs 2, as shown.

It is to be understood that I do not wish to solely restrict myself to the form of spring mattress herein shown and described,

as I may employ any suitable form of elastic spring mattress.

My adjustable frame comprises transverse end bars 3, upon which are mounted plates 4, having connections with the end springs 2. At each end, the bars 3 are provided with heads 5. The head of one bar 3 has an opening formed therethrough, which is provided with right screw-threads. The

corresponding head 5 of the other bar 3 has an opening 7 formed therethrough which is provided with left screw-threads. Each longitudinal side of the frame is formed of a rigid rod 8, provided at its ends with right and left screw-threads 9 and 10 to engage respectively within the opening 6 and 7.

From the description of the above referred to parts, it is obvious that by turning the rod 8, the bars 3 may be moved away from or toward each 7 other, as desired. Means are provided whereby the rod 8 may be manually turned, comprising arms or handles 11 preferably diametrically dis posed and connected with the rod 8, near the bar 3, as shown. In order that the, rod 8 may be locked against movement after be ing turned, I provide a forked latch 12, which is pivotally mounted upon the bar 3, adjacent the arms 11, as shown at 13. This forked latch is pivoted to swing in a vertical plane and is adapted to move into and out of engagement with the arm 11.

In the modified form of my invention, as shown in Fig. 5, each of rods 14 have their ends provided with right and left screwthreads, as shown at 15 and 16. The heads 5 are provided with openings 17, which are not screw-threaded and are formed sufficiently large to allow of a longitudinal movement of the screw-threaded portions 15 and 16 therethrough. The same form of bed bottom fabric is employed. Upon the screw-threads 15 and 16 are mounted adjusting nuts 18 and 19 respectively, engaging the heads 5. By manipulation of the nuts the bars 3 may be moved away from each other. Locking nuts 20 and 21 are employed to lock the nuts 18 and 19 respectively, against movement.
