Application filed November 27, 1911. Serial No. 662,649.
To all whomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnr BATULIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Antrim, in the county of Tioga, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal-Picks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in picks of that type adapted to be actuated by a machine for mining coal or the like.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a pick having a novel form of cutting fingers by means of which coal or the like may be more readily mined.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claim, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pick constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof.
Like reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the draw- 111g.
Referring to the drawing, the invention comprises a pick which is formed from a single casting and includes a shank 5 having a reduced end 6 which is adapted for engagement with a machine chuck of any desired type. Extending forwardly from the shank 5 is a head 7 having a fiat rear face 8, a longitudinal flat lower edge 9 and a forwardly diverging fiat upper edge 9. The front face 10 of the head is convexed from the shank 5 to the forward end of the rear face 8.
The forward end of the head is formed with a pair of inwardly extending V-shaped longitudinal slots 10 and 10 forming a consequent lower cutting finger 11, an upper cutting finger 12 and an intermediate finger 13. These cutting fingers terminate in points 11--12 and 13 and these points are disposed in an arc, the center of which is lo cated at a point on the lower side of the head in spaced relation to the central longitudinal line of said head. The lower finger 11 projects in a plane substantially parallel to said longitudinal center line of the head whereas the longitudinal center lines of the fingers 12 and 13 are disposed at an obtuse angle to said center line of the head, or in a direction away from the finger 11. The fingers 11 and 12 are formed with inclined walls 11 and 12 respectively, said walls being rearwardly inclined and merging with the front face 10 of said head, and the finger 13 is formed with inclined walls 13 which likewise incline rearwardly toward the front face 10 of said head. It is to be observed that the walls 11 and 12 respectively merge with the diverging bottom and top edges of the head, and that the point 12 of the finger 12 is disposed in rear of both of the points 11 and 13*.
From the foregoing, it will be observed that in operation the pick will slide along on its bottom longitudinal edge 9. As a result, the point 13 of the intermediate finger 13 will always be working in the coal, and as a result, the machine will be prevented from jumping and consequently becoming fast. It will also be noted that the point 11 of the bottom finger 11 is always cutting the bot tom and keeping it smooth. The point 12 of the top finger 12 being disposed in rear of the other points, causes the coal to be cut in lumps. As a result, of this construction, the fingers permit of the pick working loosely in the coal, and at the same time cuts coarse coal with great rapidity.
What is claimed is:
