To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, REINHARD HOESCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalid-Beds; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application,

This invention relates to improvement-s in paraphernalia for the care of invalids and particularly to invalid beds the object of the invention being to produce a bed which is adjustable to a sitting position and also one in which the linen may be changed without t-he necessity of taking the invalid from the bed.

A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly eifectivefor the purposes for which it is designed.

These objects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.

In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete bed. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the same in extended position. Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing a modified form of raising and lowering a seat. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view showing a spring mattress structure.

Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, 1 designates the main legs or supports of the bed and 2 the side boards thereof. The mattress of the bed is divided into two parts 3 and 4, the lower end 4 being slidable within the members 2 and having an auxiliary supporting leg 5 on its outer end. On the under side of this member 4 is a cograck 6, while 7 is a cog-wheel on the shaft 8 adapted to be operated by the crank or handle 9 having a ratchet wheel 10 engaged by a dog 11 on one of the legs 1. this portion 4 the crank 9 is operated to turn the shaft 8 and cog-wheel 7 which operating in the rack 6 moves the member 4 outward as shown in Fig. 3. When this is done it permits of the central seat 12 to be raised in the following manner: Said seat 12 islmounted on supports 13 movable in guides 14, said parts 14 being adapted to be raised by means of the rack 15 operated by the cogwheel 16 on the shaft 17 having a crank or handle 18 on which is a ratchet wheel 19 engaged by a dog 20 on one of the members 2. The operation of the crank 18 raises or lowers the seat 12. Rollers 16L are installed, one on the member 13 impinging against the guides 14 and one on the guides 14 impinging against the members 13 to prevent the members 13 from wedging.' In the center of the seat 12 is an orice 21, and below said seat are supports or guides 22 adapted to receive a bed pan or vessel 23. The member 3 is hinged or pivoted to the members 2 at its forward end as at 24 and has on its under side a projecting arm 25 from which said arm a cable 26 projects under a pulley 27 at the head of the bed and thence over a pulley 28 held upward in arms 29 at the head of the bed and said cable 26 is fastened at its outer end to a weight 27a having a guide 28a movable in a slot 29a at the head of the bed, there being a rest or shelf 29b at the foot of the member 29 to limit the movement of the weight 27 a. Also on the shaft 36 may be mounted a cable 26a connected to the other end of the member 3 for pulling the same down when it is desired to return the same to its horizontal position. And to prevent the weight 27a from pulling the member 13 to its inclined position at unexpected times the member 38 is made of a double opposed ratchet construction, there being an auxiliary dog 39a adapted to engage the same to hold it against any movement unless it is desired. Another cable 30 extends from the arm 25 over a drum 31 on a shaft 36 having a crank 37 provided with a ratchet wheel 38 engaged by a dog 39 secured Ion one of the members 2. By operating the crank 37 it pulls the arm 25 toward the head of the bed and the weight 27aL pulling on the cable 26 and the said arm 25 causes the member 3 to turn on its hinged point 24 and raise to an inclined position as shown in Fig. 3, whereby the patient may sit on the seat 12 and still be supported by the bed portion 3, the mattress 13 having a rest 13 for the purpose of resting the feet of the patient.

In the members 3 and 4 are the usual spiral springs 40 and the usual spring` menibers 41 secured on end pieces 42 having slots 43 permitting the same to slide over pins 44 to give the resiliency to the members 4 as a whole. On the members 4 may be put t-he usual fiber mattresses 45, or mattresses of the best sanitary materials.

In Fig. 4 is shown a modified means for raising and lowering the members 14 and seat 12. In this structure the members 14 have projecting arms 46 on which are hooksl 47 adapted to engage the racks 48 on the members 2 whereby these hooks 47 may be disengaged from the rack 48 and then the seat 12 lifted to desired position and the hooks 47 again engaged on the racks 48.

Secured in each of the members 3 and 4 are wires or rods 49 having projecting end pieces 50 adapted to hold the mattress 45 in place when the two parts 3 and 4 are moved apart as shown in Fig. 3. Each of the members 3 and 4 is provided with a retaining head and foot board or frame 51 which serves to hold the mattress 45 in position. Also the member 3 is provided with hooks or retaining bars 52 adapted to carry straps 53 which may be inserted Linder the patient and automatically lift and carry him back onto the mattress when the member 3 is lowered from its inclined position provided the patient is too weak to help himself.

Gn each side of the members 2 is a holster 54 adapted to receive rods 55 maintaining a table 56 disposed just in front of the seat 12, whereby the patient may use the same for eating or any other desired purpose. Such table may be turned in or out as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 to bring the table closer or farther away from the patient as may be desired.

On the members 14 at the bottom thereof, are guides 57 adapted to receive slotted members 58 on a pan 59, which pan serves to catch any overflow or splatter from the member 23, thus making the bed sanitary in that respect.

A brace member 60 projects from the body of the bed to the members 14 to give strength to the same. On the seat 12 may be placed if desired, a cushion 61.

lThe members 1 have casters 12L which are swiveled to permit the bed to be turned in any direction desired, while the member 5 has rollers 5a which are not swiveled, since the member 4 should at all times remain in horizontal alinement with the member 2.

The bed can be made of metal or wood as desired.

From the foregoing description it will readily appear that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of the' invention as set forth herein and which permits the linen to be changed one part at a time without the necessity of removing the patient from the bed. Also the patient can be handled completely within the bed with out the necessity of handling him manually and without the necessity of moving or straining to move him into the positions desired.

`While this specication sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction ofthe device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A device of the character described comprising a bed having a mattress support composed of ltwo members capable of being moved apart and a means for inclining one of said members, said means comprising hinges connecting one end of said last named member to said bed and a projecting rod secured to the under side of said member, a

roller mounted on a shaft disposed independently of said member, a ratchet wheel on said shaft, dogs adapted to engage said yratchet wheel, a cable secured to the free end of said member to be inclined and projecting around said roller and being connected to said rod, two rollers secured to the head of said bed and being spaced apart, a cable connected to said rod and projecting under one of said rollers and over the other, a weight on the end of said last named cable, a slotted guide on the head of said bed and a guide on said weight movable in said slotted guide, as described.
