Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 16, 1912 To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VILLARD PENNOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minerva, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Railway-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in metallic railway ties, and the objects of the present invention are, first, to provide a metallic railway tie of such a construction that the railway rails can be secured and held in true spaced relationship under all circumstances, and second, to provide means for securing the railway rail supports or bases together and securely tying the bases of each tie together in such a manner that they will not be disturbed as to their relative position during the time they are fastened together nor will they be disturbed as to their relative position by the removal of parts for any purpose and substituting new arts.

supports or bases are provided for a single tie. These supports or bases are provided with the integral overlapping flanges 2 and the tie flanges 3, said flangesbeing located and arranged substantially as shown. For the purpose of providing means for holding cushion blocks between the supports or bases 1 and the bottoms of the railway rails said bases are provided with the side and end flanges 4t and 5, which flanges are preferably formed as best illustrated in Fig. 1. These flanges 4 and 5 provide sockets for the reception of the cushion blocks 6, which cushion blocks are preferably formed of wood and are for the purpose of providing the suflicient amount of elasticity between the metallic supports 1 and the railway rails. The side and end flanges 4 and 5, also provide means for holding the blocks 6 in proper position and prevent their displacement.
It will be understood that by forming the overlapping flange 2, the end flanges 5 should be so formed that the cushion blocks could be slipped in endwise and under the overlapping flange 2. instead of lateral, there can be no lateral movement of the supports or bases'during the time the keys are being driven into their normal position or while the same are being removed for any purpose.
It will be understood that by providing the overlapping flange 2 the outer web of the railway rail will be seated under the bottom of said overlapping flange and by providing the vertical portion 11, the outer face of the railway rail will come in contact with the inner face of the vertical flange 11, said vertical flange being formed of such a height that it will come quite close to the,
botltom of the tread flange 12 of the railway ra1 s.
For the purpose of holding the inner base flange of" the railway rail the tie bar 7 is provided at its ends with the overlapping tongues 13 and when the keys 11 are driven into their normal positions they will have a tendency to draw the tie bars 7 down and into the groove 14: between the integral flanges 3 and at the same time snugly seat the overlapping tongues 13 upon the upper faces of the inner base flanges of the railway rails. In the drawings I have illustrated the keys 10 formed by bending pieces of metal in such a manner as to bring their inner faces in close contact with each other, thereby providing means for spreading the non-connected ends of the wedges, after the wedges have been driven into their normal positions and into the position to hold the tie bar 7 and the supports or bases 1 securely together.
It will be understood that by spreading the ends of the keys 10 there can be no displacement of said keys from any cause. For the purpose of preventing any sliding movement of the supports or bases upon the road bed, said supports or bases are provided with the side and end flanges 15, which side and end flanges are designed to be inserted in the road bed or foundation. For the purpose of providing means for supporting the bases 1 directly under the railway rails proper, the flanges 16 are provided, which flanges are preferably located at right angles to the length of the railway rails proper as best illustrated in Fig. 3. These supporting flanges 16 also assist in preventing any creeping of the supports orbases 1, owing to the fact that they are located directly under the railway rails. It will be understood that the side and end flanges 15 assist in preventing the creeping of the supports or bases 1. The supports or bases 1 are made up of what might be termed longitudinal rectangular portions and lateral extensions, the lateral extensions are located at substantially right angles to the longitu dinal portions and are so located for the purpose of more securely holding the bases against displacement in directions lateral to the length of'the railway rails and at the same time better preventing the creeping of the supports or bases.
The flanges 3'upon each of the railway supports or bases should be spaced apart a distance substantially equal to the thickness of the tie bars '7, or in other words the tie bars 7 should be formed of such a thickness that when they are placed in position they will fit closely between the inner faces of the flanges 3, thereby providing substantially and comparatively rigid connection as between the flanges 3 and the tie bars 7 but the mechanical construction should be such that the tie bars can be easily connected but at the same time connected in such a manner that little or no fitting of the parts is necessary when the ties proper are placed in position upon the railway bed.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a metallic tie, the combination of railway rail supports, said supports provided with overhanging flanges, sockets formed in the upper portions of the supports, flanges provided with elongated slots, tie bars located between the flanges provided wit-h the elongated slots, said tie bars I provided with elongated slots and tongues, the tongues adapted to overlap the inner base flanges of the railway rail and a key adapted to connect the railway supports and tie bars together, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
' 2. In a metallic tie, the combination of railway rail supports, said supports provided with overhanging flanges, sockets formed in the upper portions of the supports, flanges provided with elongated slots,
tie bars located between the flanges provided with elongated slots, said tie bars provided with elongated slots and tongues,the tongues adapted to overlap the inner base flanges of the railway rail and a key adapted to con nect the railway supports and tie bars together, and cushioned blocks adapted for contact with the bottom of the railway rails, iublstantially as and for the purpose speci- 1e 3. In a railway tie of the class described, the combination of bases provided with end and side flanges adapted to be seated in a railway bed, socket flanges located upon the upper faces of the bases, cushioned blocks adapted to be located in the sockets, flanges adapted to be seated uponthe outer base provided with vertical elongated slots, a tie bar provided with vertical elongated slots and tongues, the slots adapted to register with the vertical elongated slots formed in the tie bar flanges upon the bases and keys adapted to hold the tongues of the tie bars in contact with the inner base flanges of the railway rails, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. In a railway tie of the class described, bases provided with railway holding flanges, said bases provided with sockets formed in their upper faces, cushioned blocks located in the sockets, tie bar connecting flanges pro vided with vertical elongated slots, a tie bar provided with vertical elongated slots and tongues, the slots adapted to register with the vertical elongated slots formed in the tie bar flanges upon the bases and keys adapted to hold the tongues of the tie bars in contact with the inner base flanges of the railway rails, and the keys adapted to be secured in fixed position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
6. In a railway tie of the class described, railway rail supporting bases consisting of longitudinal and lateral portions located at substantially right angles to each other, sockets formed in the upper faces of the bases, flanges extended inward and over the sockets for a portion of the width of the sockets, tie bar connecting flanges and a tie bar and securing keys, the tie bar connecting flanges and the tie bar provided with vertical elongated slots and the keys adapted to draw the tie bar toward the bases, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
7 In a railway tie of the class described, the combination of railway bases, said railway bases provided with connecting flanges, said connecting flanges provided with vertical elongated slots, a tie bar provided with vertical elongated slots and extended tongues and vertically tapered keys, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
8. In a railway tie of the class described, the combination of railway bases, said railway bases provided with connecting flanges, said connecting flanges provided with vertical elongated slots, a tie bar provided with vertical elongated slots and extended tongues and vertically tapered keys, and means for securing the keys in fixed position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
