BURNER FOR INFLAMMABLE VOLATILE FLUIDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 16, 1912.
Application filed Ilecem ber Serial No. 597,525.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS B. CURTIS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burners for Inflammable Volatile Fluids; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to burners for inflammable volatile fluids, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple device of this description in which there are but three operative parts including a wick, which latter never comes in contact with the flame but merely serves as a conductor to supply the liquid fuel to a vaporizing chamber.
Vith these ends in view my invention consists in certain details of construction hereinafter fully described and then particularly pointed out in the claim which conclusdes this description.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved burner in operation, and Fig. 2 a sectional elevation of the burner itself.
Similar numerals of reference denote like parts in both figures of the drawing.
1 is the main body portion or casing of the burner, which is of any suitable shape, is made hollow, and is provided at the upper extremity with any suitable threaded open neck 2.
3 is a cap which is formed with a downwardly extending tubular portion 4, the upper extremity being turned over and spaced from said tubular portion to form an annular vaporizing chamber 5 which is provided with outwardly opening vents 6, which may be placed as close together as desired, the stock of the cap beingthen threaded below the vaporizing chamber so as to engage with the threaded portion of the neck 2 when the cap is placed in position. 7
Th outside diameter of the tubular portion 4 is less than the interior diameter of the neck 2 so that a suitable wick 7 may surround the portion 4 and be confined at its upper end between said portion and neck, and this wick when it is in proper position extends about flush with the upper surface of the neck, so as to leave the chamber 5 perfectly free.
The operation of my improvement is as follows :When any suitable inflammable volatile fluid, such as alcohol, is poured within the tubular portion 4 it will be absorbed by the wick 7 and by igniting the fumes within this tubular portion, the latter will be heated so that when the fluid has saturated the wick a highly inflammable gas due to the fumes will be collected within the chamber 5 and will pass outwardly through the vents 6, and as soon as this gas commences to discharge through these vents it will be ignited by the flame coming up from the tubular portion 4, and the jets of flame will be blue and will appear after the fashion shown in Fig. 1. After a short time the flame within the tubular portion 4 will die down and disappear completely and thereafter all heat will be caused by the jets themselves.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the wick is merely a feeder to supply fuel to the heated vaporizing chamber, and therefore it is not necessary to renew the wick.
The flame is readily smothered by any suitable-cap (not shown) and the danger that frequently results from using burners of this description is reduced to a minimum.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A burner of the type set forth, including a main body formed with an upwardly ex tending neck which is threaded at its free end, and a cap having an outer part which is formed with a lower threaded portion to engage said threads of the neck and having its upper part bent over and down to form an inner tubular part which latter extends parallel and in spaced relation to said outer part and terminates at, a point slightly above the bottom of the body, said outer part the temporary combustion chamber to inibeing formed with openings adjacent its tially heat the tubular part. 10 top, and an annular wick in the space be- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature tween the inner and outer parts, said wick in presence of two witnesses.
5 having its bottom engaging the bottom of LEWIS B. CURTIS.
the body and its upper end terminating be- Witnesses: low the openings of the outer part, the lower F. W. SIVIIII'H, J r., end of the wick forming the side walls of M. T. LONGDEN.
