G. E. SALSBURY. APPARATUS FOR PRODUCING CONCRETE PIPE WITH WATERPROOF LINING THEREIN. APPLICATION FILED MAY 6. 1911.

GEORGE E. SALSBURY, OF ARCADIA, CALIFORNIA.
APPARATUS FOR PRODUCING CONCRETE 1? Specification of Letters Patent.
IPE WITH WATERPROOF LINING THEREIN.
Patented Apr. 16,1912.
Application filed May 6, 1911. Serial No. 625,606.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. SALSBURY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Arcadia, in the county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Apparatus for Producing Concrete Pipe with Waterproof Lining Therein; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apper tains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to apparatus for producing concrete pipe with waterproof lining therein.
Objects of the invention are to provide and devise economical apparatus for producing concrete pipe with a lining therein, which lining is not only waterproof, but presents a smooth even surface for water to flow against and may be readily and effectively applied to ordinary concrete pipe and made of any desired thickness.
Other objects and the advantages of the I invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from a consideration of the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying "drawings showing the preferred form of apparatus whereby the process may be carried out.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a partly broken elevational view of the apparatus, some of the parts being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a partial view taken on line 33 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the cover plate.
The material for the lining preferably consists of asphaltum which may be placed in the heating tank 2 arranged on the fire box 3 to the rear end of which box may be connected the smoke stack 4. A suitable burner 5 may extend into the fire box through an opening 6 in the 'front end of the box. Angle bars 7 may extend between and be suitably secured to the sides 8 and 9 of the tank 2 adjacent to the top edge of said sides, and top plates 10 and 11 extending along each side of the tank may be suitably secured to said angle bars and to the tank. A removable cover plate 12 having openings 13 therein may be fitted between the top plates 10 and 11 to have said openings disposed between adjacent angle bars 7 to be free from obstruction by the angle bars; it being understood that any one of a num ber of cover plates having openings suitable for the size of the concrete pipe to be lined may be used. Surrounding the openings 13 may be any suitable means for retaining the sections 1 1 of concrete pipe in position, that shown consisting of standards 15 between which the bell end of the concrete pipe is placed in position for the lining operations.
In applying the lining material to the interior of the concrete pipe'the device preferably used may consist of a divided rod 16 provided at its top end with a handle 20 and at its lower end with a perforated container 18 and an annular brush 19 of mineral wool or wire cloth or gauze or felt or other suitable material; another brush 31 being arranged on the rod 16 at a suitable distance above the brush 19. As shown, the container 18 may be provided with perforations 21 near its bottom and said bottom may bear against the collar 17 and the brush 19 may be clamped between said bot-- tom and a disk 22 which is held pressed against said brush by means of nut 23 on the lower end of rod 16; also the brush 31 may be removably held between disks 24: and 25 held together by bolts 26 and the upper portion of said rod may be threaded into a socket 27 on the disk 24: and the lower portion of the rod may be threaded into a socket 28 on the disk 25.
With the apparatus as above described, it will be seen that a plurality of concrete pipe sections 14: constructed by any suitable or approved means may be placed in upright position at the openings in the cover plate, and the asphaltum having been heated preferably to the boiling point and the container 18 having been filled with the asphaltum, the handle 20 may be raised by the operator to cause the brush 19 to move upwardly and into the pipe section whereupon the asphaltum is sprayed or fed from said container onto the interior of the pipe section and onto the brush and it is applied as a lining to the interior of said pipe section when the brush is raised through the pipe section; after the brush 19 has been raised to the upper extremity of the pipe section the handle 20 may bepushed downwardly to cause the brush 31 to smooth down and even the surface of the lining 29. The asphaltum being applied boiling hot it penetrates the pores of the pipe, and, hardening quickly, it adheres very tenaciously tions of lining the concrete pipe.
It will be understood that the apparatus admits of enlargement and that a number of the lining devices may be in use at the same time.
I claim:
1. The combination of a tank, a cover plate for said tank having openings therein, means at said openings for retaining in position sections of concrete pipe, means for heating material in the tank, and a device for lining the interior of said sections of concrete pipe with said material, said device consisting of a rod, a brush at the lower end of said rod, a container on the rod for supplying the material to said brush, and a sec- 0nd brush on said rod disposed above the first mentioned brush, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a tank, a cover plate over said tank having openings therein, means at said openings for retaining in position sections 0 concrete pipe, means for heating material in the tank, means for moving a portion of the heated material into the pipe and spraying it on the interior of said pipe to form a lining therein, and means to smooth down and even the surface of said lining.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence'of two subscribing witnesses at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, State of California, this 29th day of April A. D. 1911.
GEORGE E. SALSBURY.
