To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT G. SoHERnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stack- Heads for Wall-Registers, of which the following is a specification. V
My invention relates to improvements in the top sections or heads of hot air conductor pipe used in the walls and partltions of buildings, which is usually called a stack, and has special reference to such heads used in connection with wall registers.
The objects of my invention are, provision of facilities for and securing the head in position, so that it may be assembled more certainly and securely with the stack, and so that it will be in the proper position and substantially se cured in that position to receive the wall register.
I attain the above objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved stack head installed in a wall, the floor being-shown in section and partially broken away, and the register removed; Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1, the register being shown attached in section; and Fig. 4 is a section on line 44 of Fig. 2, the stack head being shown in elevation, and the walls and register in section.
The reference numeral 1 designates the studding of a wall in which my stack head is installed, and 2 designates the lathing. The present approved form of wall register, 3, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4, extends outwardly from the wall, 4, and is inclined backwardly at an angle with the floor, upon which its lower edge contacts and rests. The position of the register is determined by its relation to the wall and floor, and it is, therefore, necessary to so position and secure the stack head that it will fit the register. A further fit with the stack is also necessary.
So far as I am aware, it has been the universal practice hitherto to measure and mark out the desired location for the stack head, and then endeavor to fit the stack head upon the stack so that it will occupy the wished for location. The measuring and first, the
properly locating marking of the location for the stack head occasions many opportunities for error, and
the fitting of the stack head to the stack so that it will occupy the ascertained position, and the securing of it in place are operations also-affording opportunity for error.
The studding in buildings are now uniformly set upon sixteen inch centers so as to receive a regulation length of lath, and the top orfinishing flooring, designated in the drawings by the numeral 5, comes of a uniform thickness of seven eighths of an inch.
I have taken advantage of the above conditions by providing means for securely locating my stack head with a fixed relation to the studding and floor, so that when the top floor and plaster have been put in position, the stack head will be in proper place to receive the register and will be so securely secured in position as to form a suitable mounting for the register without the necessity of otherwise providing therefor. With the stack head located, it is now only necessary to fit the stack to it, which is a comparatively simple matter, as this adjustment can no longer interfere with the fit between the stack head and the register.
To locate and secure the stack head in position, I have provided upon each side of the stack head two laterally extending arms, 6, so positioned as to contact the edge of adjacent studs when the stack head is in proper horizontal position; and upon the front of the stack head below the opening, 7, for the register are two like arms, 8, ex tending forwardly and so located as to rest upon the first or rough floor when the stack head is in proper vertical position. Nails, 9, are driven through the arms, 6 and 8, into the studding and rough flooring respectively to secure the stack head in position.
The arms, 6 and 8, may be either right angled pieces soldered or otherwise securely attached to the stack head, as shown in Fig. 3, or they may be punched from the body of the metal as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4. It will be seen, by reference to Figs. 1 and 3 especially, that the stack head comprises an inner wall, 10, and an outer wall, 11, which are separated by an air space. When the arms are cut from the metal of the stack head, it is obvious that the metal of the outer wall, 11, only will be out, which will not make an aperture in to the hot air duct proper.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A stack head for Wall registers comprising a section of substantially rectangular hot air conduit, and the front being inclined backwardly' from the bottom to the top, a register opening in said front, and strips of tin cut and bent up from the body of the section and extending at right angles from the sides and front and adapted to contact respectively with the studding and rough flooring of a building for locating and securing said head horizontally and vertically.
2. A stack head for Wall registers comprising a double Wall section of substantially rectangular hot air conduit, and the front being inclined backWardly from the bottom to the top, a register opening in said front, and tongues cut from the outer of said Walls and adapted to be bent so as to extend at right angles from the sides and front for locating and securing said head horizontally and vertically.
3. A stack head for Wall registers comprising a section of substantially rectangular hot air conduit, and the front being inclined backwardly from the bottom to the top, a register opening in said front, and arms out and bent up from the body of the outer Wall extending at right angles from the sides and front for locating and securing said head horizontally and vertically.
