To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, KARL KIEFER, a c1t1- I zen of the United States, residingat Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to filters wherein a number of plates or frames are juxtaposed without any exterior casing, similar to those of Patents No. 605,110, June 7 1898, and No. 550,955, December 10, 1895.
The objects of my improvement are to simplify such filters, to make them more efiicient, and to adapt them for use under higher pressures and for better filtration.
The drawing shows a cross-section through part of a filter constructed according to my invention.
I do not show the general arrangement of this filter, such as side rods and mechanism for compressing the elements, as various suitable appliances of that character are well known in the art.
The filter mass used in connection with my improvement is preferably in the form of layers M of compressed moist fibrous pulp, previously formed extraneously of the frames B. They have their marginal parts more compressed than their central parts, forming gasket parts and filtering parts, respectively. As shown, they are preferably formed so that the extra marginal compression is equal on the two sides of the layer, making them symmetrical.
Pulp filter layers with outer margins more compressed are described and claimed in my Patent No. 1,015,326, of January 23, 1912. Such extra compression of parts of the layers may be producefl while compressing the layers, as with a packing machine described and claimed in my patent of February 20, 1906, Reissue No. 12,455.
The surface of the ledges 3 of the plates or frames B should be of considerable width,
preferably greater than the thickness of the filter layers at their places of contact with said ledges. Also, the surfaces of the ledges are smoothly finished, so as to make liquidtight contact with the tightly compressed parts of the layers. Gaskets 4- are provided between the frames. The exterior extensions 5 have openings 6 that register when the frames are assembled, and form inlet and outlet conduits. The gaskets 4 also extend around these openings 6. h' frame interior thinner part 7 with a succession of open spaces or liquid-conducting channels 8. Passages 9 lead from the registering openings 6 to the interior channels 8. Thus, the pulp layers, making contact on both sides with the open-work or gridiron-like struc tures 7, are supplied with liquid, and liquid drained from them, through their channels 8 and through the'passages 9, accordingly as the passage 9 of a frame leads into the inlet or outlet conduit, formed at opposite sides bythe registering openings 6. Alinement of the frames throughout the series is attained simply and effectively by so forming the ledges 3, adjacent to their regions of contact with the more compressed parts of the filter layers, that a part 10 of the ledge of each frame B fits inside the adjacent part 11 of the ledge of the adjacent frame. These parts 10 and 11, thus telescoping, may be made to fit accurately at every point around the frames thus assembled. Furthermore, the frames may be identical in formation, in which case it is only necessary to so arrange them that their assages 9 alternate from one side to the ot er, in assembling.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a filter, juxtaposed frames and gaskets between them, each frame comprising a thin liquid -conducting structure and a \thicker ledge surrounding the thin structure, each frame having its ledge telescopin the ledges of the adjacent ones, and eac 1 led e having exterior extensions provided wit moist, fibrous pul contained between the thin structures 0 adjacent frames, with edges supported by the adjacent telescoping parts of the frames.
2. In a filter, juxtaposed frames and gaskets between them, each frame comprising a thin liquid-conductin structure and a thicker led e surroun in ture, each ame having its ledge telescopin the ledges of the ad acent ones, and each le e having exterior extensions provided wit re istering openings, and layers of moist, fi rous pulp contained between the thin structures of adjacent frames, said frames having passages from theigfi'egistering openings to their thin structures and to the layers contained therebetween.
