WELL-DRILLING MACHINE.
Application filed February 28, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it k-nown that I, GREEN B. KELLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Las Cruces, in the county of Donal Ana and State of New Mexico, have invented a new and useful Tell-Drilling Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to well drilling machines.
The Objects of the invention are to improve and simplify the construction of such machines as well as to increase their etliciency in operation.
A further object of the invention is to con struct the machine in such a manner that it is adapted to drive or turn down the well casing, whereby to avoid the necessity of driving the well casing with the drill bar of the machine as is usually done.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved means for adjusting the drill bar or plunger during the drilling operation.
Another object of the invention is to operate the drill bar drum directly from the draft wheel, without the intermediation of cogs or other gears.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein described can be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a. well drilling machine constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view, the upright being partly broken away, showingIr particularly the draft portion of the machine. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly broken away, showing the upright member of the machine. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of a portion of the draft member of the machine, showing the trip mechanism for the drill bar drum. Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a` section on the line (56 of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7 7 of Fig. 2. Fig. 8 is a section on the line 8*-8 of Fig. 3.

The machine of the present invention referably includes a bearing A which is a apted to surround the site of the well and is composed of a pair of side bars 1 1 and cross pieces 2-2 upon which is mounted ay table 3 having therein a circular aperture in which is mounted a cylinder 4 which preferably is threaded so as to facilitate the downward feeding or screwing movement of the well casing. Surrounding the cylinder 4 is a roller or caster bearing 5 which is adapted to facilitate the rotary movement of the well drilling frame upon the bearing A.
The rotary frame of the machine preferably includes a horizontal portion B and a vertical portion C which will be referred to hereafter as the draft member and the upright respectively. The draft member B, as shown in Fig. 2, is made up of parallel side pieces 10 which are connected with each other at different points by the cross pieces 11. The cross pieces 11 at the inner ends of the draft member B form a square chamber in which is mounted a plate 12 having formed therein a circular aperture of suiiicient dimension to receive the upper end of the cylinder 4, the lower surface of said plate 12 resting upon the roller bearing 5. The cylinder 4 thus serves to hold the draft member B upon the bearing A and also to permit the introduction of the well casing rom time to time. The draft member B, at its outer end, has suitably journaled thereon, a. draft wheel l5. The draft member B is also provided with a swingletree 16 by means of which the frame of the machine is adapted to be operated in the direction of movement of the hand of a clock when looking downward.
Ipropose to rotate my machine clockwise in order that I may utilize the same for the purpose of driving the Well casing, it being understood that the Well casing is fed downward through the cylinder 4 and is suitably turned or screwed into position by being held in any suitable manner upon the draft portion B, so that the rotation of said draft portion or member B causes the well casing to be turned down into position.
The upright C is suitably mounted as indicated at 20 upon the draft member B and is made up of a pair of side pieces 21-21 which are parallel with eachother at their upper ends as indicated in Fig. 3, and are suitably spread apart at their lower ends as shown. The upright C at its upper end is provided with a stub shaft 24 on which is swiveled a plate 25 with which is connected four or more brace rods or cords 26 which serve to support the upright C in proper position and yet to permit the free rotation thereof together with the draft member B.
The means for adjusting or lowering the drill bar during the reciprocating movement thereof, Without interfering with the operation of the drill bar, preferably includes a pulley 30 which is vertically adjustable and is guided in its vertical movement by means of the trunnions 31 which project in opposite directions into longitudinal grooves 32 formed in the inner faces of the members 21 of the upright. The pulley 30 at its upper end is provided with a wheel 33 which is engaged by a rope or cable 34 eX- tending over pulleys 35 journaled in the members 21 and extending downward to drums 3G which are mounted upon a shaft 37 journaled in the lower ends of the arms 21 and provided with a crank 38 and a ratchet wheel 39 which is engaged by a pawl 40.
It is to be understood that the drill bar or plunger by means of which the well is drilled, is supported upon a cable 4t2 which passes over the pulley 30 and is suitably reciprocated in the manner hereinafter described. Dnring the reciprocating movement of the drill bar, and as the well progresses downward, the shaft 37 is rotated from time to time to permit the gradual lowering of the pulleys 30 whereby to adjust the drill bar downwardly. When the trunnions 31 have reached the lower ends of the grooves 32, the pulley 30 is raised to the npper ends of said groove and the cable 42 which supports the drill bar is slackened so as to lower said drill bar to the bottom of the well, after which the reciprocation of the drill bar is recommenced and the pulley 30 is again lowered from time to time as needed.
The means for reciprocating the cable Li2 which carries the drill bar, will now be described with particular reference to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. The cable 42 after passing over the. pulley 30, extends downward to a drnin l5 which is suitably journaled in the dra t( member B and is proA vided at one end thereof with a member 4G which is engaged by a suitable band brake 4T operated by means of a handle 4S. The band brake 4T is ei'nployed7 as will be under dood. in lf'nrering the drill into the well. For the purpose of reciprocating the well drill. tludrinn ll5 is rotated partially forward so as to raise the drill bar and then is permitted to rotate backward a part of a revolution so as to drop the drill bar into the Well. The means for accomplishing this result will now be described. The shaft 50 of the drum 45, as shown in Fig. 4, is bent at its outer end to form a crank member 51 which is in the path of movement of a latch 52 pivoted upon a crank 53 connected with a shaft 54 which acts as the journal of the draft wheel 15 and is rigidly secured thereto so as to rotate therewith. The latch 52 is normally held in position so as to engage the .crank 51, by means such as the expansive coil spring 56. It will be obvious that as the shaft 54 is rotated by the rotation of the draft wheel 15, the latch 52 engages the crank 51 of the drum 45 and rotates said drum so as to raise the drill bar. hen the drill bar is raised by the partial rotation of the drum 45, the latch 52 is tripped in the manner hereinafter described and the drum 45 then rotates partially in the opposite direction, thus permitting the droppng movement of the drill bar.
The means for tripping the latch 52 so as to permit the proper operation of the drill bar, preferably consists of a wheel or anti-friction device (30 which is journaled at 61 in a frame 62 consisting of a pair of spaced bars which are supported at one end by means of a rod 63 connected with one of the side bars 10 of the frame A and at their opposite ends by means of a bar G4 which extends upward through the side bars 10 of the member C as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing, the bar G4 being slidably mounted in said member l0 so as to permit the wheel 60 to be adjusted upward or downward, a pin 65 being removably extended through the bar 64 so as to hold the same in any position to which it has been adjusted. When the wheel 60 is lowered by means of the bar G4 to such a point that the latch 52 will not engage said wheel, the rotation of the machine can be utilized for winding up the drill bar and withdrawing it from the well, but when it is desired to operate the drill bar in a reciprocating manner, the wheel 60 is so adjusted that once during each revolution of the draft wheel 15, the latch 52 at its outer end, will engage the wheel (it) and will thus be shifted out of engagement with the crank member 51 whereupon the weight of the drill bar will cause a reverse rotation of the drinn 4:3 as will be readily understood.
The well drilling machine of the present invention strong simple and inexpensive in construction as well as thoroughly eltirient in operation.

l. well drilling machine having a drill ha r drum. a draft wheel. an operating device rotatable with the draft wheel, alatch mounted on the operating device for connecting the rotatable device with the drill bar drum, and a rotatable anti-friction device movable into and out of the path of said latch for releasing the same on each rotation of the draft wheel.
2. A well drilling machine having a draft wheel, a drum for the drill bar cable, a crank on the draft wheel, a crank on said drum, a latch for connecting said cranks with each other, and an adjustable Wheel for releasing said latch.
3. A well drilling machine having a draft wheel, a drum for the drill bar cable, a crank on said draft wheel, a crank on said drum, a latch for connecting said cranks with each other, a wheel for periodically releasing said latch, and means for adjusting said wheel toward and from the latch.
1. A well drilling machine having a draft wheel, a drum for the drill bar cable, a latch for connecting said draft wheel and said drum, and an adjustable wheel for periodically releasing said latch.
5. A well drilling machine having a draft wheel, a drum for the drill bar cable, means for coupling said draft wheel up with said drum, and an adjustable wheel for periodically disconnecting said drum and draft wheel.
6. A well drilling machine having a bearing, a threaded cylinder mounted in said bearing to guide the well casing, a rotary frame connected with said bearing, a well drilling means carried by said frame.
7. A well drilling machine comprising a bearing having a cylinder therein, a frame mounted on said bearing around said cylinder, said frame comprising a draft portion and an upright, a draft wheel connected with said draft portion, a drum mounted on said draft portion, a latch for connecting said drum and said draft wheel, a wheel for releasing said latch and for disconnect-ing said drum from said draft wheel, a cable connected with said drum, a vertically adjustable pulley mounted on said upright to receive said cable, cables for raising and lowering said pulley, and means for bracing the upper end of said upright.
8. A well drilling machine comprising a bearing having a threaded cylinder therein` a frame rotatable upon said bearing and comprising a draft portion and an upright, a wheel connected with said draft portion.` a drum mounted upon said draft portion and having a crank, a crank rigidly connected to said wheel, a latch mounted upon said last mentioned crank and engaging said first mentioned crank, a wheel adjustably mounted on said draft portion and being adapted to be engaged by said latch to release the crank portion of the wheel from the crank portion of the draft, a band brake for said drum, a cable connected to said drum, a pulley vertically mounted upon said upright to receive said cable, and a cable extending through the upper end of said upright and connected with said pulley for adjusting the same vertically'.
