Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL H. HOVEY, OF KILBORN, OHIO.
MACHINE FOR CREASING STRAPS OF LEATHER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 10,231, dated November 15, 1853. n
T0 all wiz-0m it may concern Be it known that l, DANIEL H. Hovnr, of Kilborn, in the county of Delaware and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Oreasing Straps and other Forms of Leather for Harnesses and other Purposes; and T do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 being a plan of the machine; Fig. 2, a vertical section thereof in the line a; a of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 an end view of the same.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Across one end of a table, or bench, A, and raised a little above it, is secured a small bar g; and upon this slide two creasers l1., l1., which have their upper adjacent edges Z, Z, sharpened, (as shown in Fig. 3,) to the proper form for creasing the leather, and are provided with shoulders le, 7c, parallel with said edges, and serving to confine the strap and to limit the distance it is to be creased from its edges. These creasers are forced together by means of springs z', z', attached to their lower sides and to the table A. Between said springs, behind the creasers, is situated an oval, or oblong, cam m, which is vibrated on a perpendicular pivot a, by means of a lever p, reaching to one side of the table. By drawing forward said lever, the cam spreads apart the springs i, z', and, consequently, the creasers 71 7L, wide enough to receive the strap to be creased, which having been insertedv between them, the said lever is let free to allow said springs to force the creasers against the edges ot' the strap.
Above the creasers is situated a horizontal roller c, turning in bearings a, a, which move perpendicularly in guides leading down through the table. Said bearings are liept up by springs Z), ZJ, high enough to hold the roller c, as far above the creasers as desired. Their lower ends are connected by a bar, to which is attached a strap CZ, connecting it with a pawl lever e, one end of which is hinged to one side of the table, and the other end is tree to be pressed down by the root, and is held in any position by a ratch f, on the opposite side of the table.
The strap to be creased having been inserted between the creasers, as above described, the roller c, is broughtdown upon it by depressing the lever e; it is then drawn through the machine by the operator, whereby it is creased at a uniform distance from its edges, however much it may vary in width; since, if it narrows, the springs z', z', press the creasers against its edges, and, it it widens, it forces the creasers apart.
Having thus fully described my improved machine for creasing straps, &c., for harnesses and other purposes, what I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the self-adjusting creasers 7L, 7L, springs z', 2', vibratory cam m, and pressure roller c, arranged and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
The above specification of my improved machine for creasing straps and other forms o1a leather for harnesses and other purposes signed by me this third day of March 1853.
.DANIEL H. HOVEY.
