My invention pertains to heating furnaces and relates to improvements in the apparatus provided for moistening the heated air.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description of the drawing, which illustrates an exemplifying structure in which the invention is embodied.
Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in vertical section of a furnace embodying the invention: and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Reference character 1 designates the ashbox; 3, the fire-pot; and 4, the feed-throat. These, with the other general structural features of the furnace, may be of any usual or suitable type.
17 is an opening through the furnace casing conveniently placed adjacent to the firepot: 18, a water-pan disposed within the space between the fire-pot and the casing and accessible for filling and placing and removal through such opening, this pan having its inner wall lying up against the firepot: 19, a vertical partition dividing the pan into a main outer portion and a horizontally thin inner portion: 20, an aperture through the partition at the base of the main portion of the pan, the thin inner portion of the pan being preferably somewhat deeper than the main portion: and 21, circumferential 6X tensions of the thin inner portions of the water-pan, usually adapted, as shown, to partially encircle the fire-pot.
In the ordinary water-pans employed in furnaces there is a tendency when water is liberally supplied for the Water to boil over and, furthermore, the supply of water is usually insufficient to provide the desired liberality of evaporation. My invention makes provision for improving on these conditions.
The object of the extensions 21 is to secure a more extended contact ofthe water-pan with the fire-pot and at the same time per mit the entire pan to be withdrawn through the opening in the casing, and for this same reason 1t 1s found advantageous to make one .of the extensions of superior length in case there be two of the extensions.

The thin inner compartment of the waterpan may be more or less filled with refractory granular material, fine pieces of brick, for instance, and the main portion of the pan is to be filled with water. The water finds its way through small opening 20 to the granular. material and, by capillary attraction, moistens the granular mass and the heat absorbed from the fire-pot rapidly evaporates the water, continued supply being furnished from the main portion of the pan.
It is desirable that the inner compartment of the pan be deeper than the main compartment, as illustrated, in order that there may be water distributed throughout the length of the inner compartment where it can reach an extended surface of granular material and also in order that the main compartment may be completely drained into the inner compartment. It is also highly desirable that the partition separating the two compartments of the pan be lower than the main walls of the pan in order that in case boiling should take place in the inner compartment, the water may boil over into the cooler outer compartment. Water in the main portion of the pan is comparatively cool and without liability to boil over, and at the same time the small body of water carried by the granular material is at high heat and provides for rapid evaporation without danger of boiling over.
I claim 1. A furnace comprising, a fire-pot, a water-pan disposed against the fire-pot, said water-pan being open at the top, a partition forming the water-pan into a main outer compartment and a transversely thin inner compartment, an aperture being provided in the base of the partition between the two compartments, and the top of the partition being lower than the main walls of the pan so that the water may boil over from one compartment into the other without boiling over the sides of the pan, combined substan tially as set forth.

A furnace comprising a firepot, a water-pan disposed'against the fire-pot, said pan comprising an inner portion lying against the fire-pot for a considerable part of the circumference thereof, and an outer partconstituting a reservoir, the said inner part being deeper than the outer part, and a partition between the parts, there being a small perforation at the bottom of the partition leading from the outer to the inner part, the said inner part being open at the top.

A furnace comprising, a fire-pot, a water-pan disposed against the fire-pot, said water-pan being open at the top, and a partition forming the water-pan into a main outer compartment and a transversely thin inner compartment, an aperture being provided in the base of the partition between the two compartments, the inner compartment having a side extension against the fire-pot and beyond the width of the main compartment, combined substantially as set forth.
4:. A water pan for furnaces, open at the top and divided by a partition into a main outer compartment and a relatively narrow inner compartment, the said inner compartment being shaped to correspond to the Wall of the furnace and provided With side exten sions resting against the wall of the furnace, the inner compartment being of greater depth than the outer compartment, the partition having an opening in its base permit- LOUIS DUEMER.
