LOWELL ARTHUR BARTLETT, OF DANVILLE, VERMONT.
SELF-RIGI-ITING LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 31, 1911.
Patented Apr. 9, 1912.
Serial No. 657,796.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, LOWELL A. BARTLETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the'county of Caledonia and State of Vermont, have invented new and useful Improvements in Self-Righting Lamps, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to lamps and more particularly to that type which is known in the art as self righting lamps.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple, inexpensive, and which when tilted or knocked over, will automatically right itself and thereby prevent explosions.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lamp of this character having a body independent of the tank so that it may be readily removed therefrom with the chimney support or burner and which coacts with the tank to form a substantially semispheroidal body.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view therethrough.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents the tank which has the lower portion of its sides 2 constructed in the form of a semi-sphere with the end or bottom slightly flattened as shown at 3 and provided with a longitudinal wei ht 1. The upper half of the sides graduaTly merges into a neck 5 which has secured upon its upper ends diametrically opposite projections or lugs 6. These lugs are adapted to engage a bayonet slot 7 formed in the neck 8 of the body 9. This neck is substantially U-shaped in cross section so as to overhang the neck 5 and is provided on its inner surface with screw threads 10 adapted to receive the attaching nipple carried by the burner 12. The body 9 is an inverted cup shape structure and its sides conform to the curvature of the sides 2 so that a semispheroidal structure is produced when the Copies of this patent may be obtained for body is applied to the tank as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The body is removably mounted upon the tank by means of the studs and bayonet slot 6 and 7 so that access can be had to the opening 13 in the tank.
The chimney holdin collar 17 carried by the burner is provide with spring fingers 18 and 19, each having inward offsets so as to form shoulders 20 for engagement with the shoulder 21 formed on the chimney base 22. When the chimney is inserted the fingers 18 and 19 springapart to allow the shoulder 21 to engage beneath the shoulders 20 thereby holding the chimney securely in position within the collar. The body 9 and the burner and chimney may be readily removed from the neck 5, as will be understood. It will be noticed that when the body is applied to the tank, as shown in Fig. 2, a considerable airspace is formed between the top of the tank and the sides and top of the body which is independent of the tank and thereby receives no oil. The upper half of the structure is. thereby made very light so that when the lamp is tilted, the weight will immediately act to return the lamp to upright position, the oil in the tank assisting in this action.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. In a lamp, a tank, a neck projecting vertically therefrom, a shell-like body secured upon the neck and having its edges engaging the tank and its sides forming a continuation of the sides of the tank, and a burner removably secured to the body.
2. In a lamp, a tank, a neck projecting vertically therefrom, an inverted cup shape body removably secured to the neck and having its edges contacting with the tank, said body being separated from the tank by an air space, and a burner removably secured to the body.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LOWELL ARTHUR BARTLETT.
