This invention relates to cattle-branding instruments and it has for object to provide an improved and simple tool whereby horses and cattle may have identification numbers or marks branded or tattooed on the gums.

According to this invention the instrument comprises a divided holder adapted to clamp one or more groups of needles in the form of one or more numerals or characters, or combination of the same.

In one construction the holder may consist of a longitudinally divided cylinder of metal channeled throughout its length in the form of one or more numerals or characters part of each numeral or character being fashioned in one member of the cylinder and part in the other member, and adapted to receive in said channeled portions a number of needles which are gripped between the two members of the cylinder and caused to assume the configuration of the numeral or character cut therein; the pointed extremities of the needles projecting for a short distance from one end of the cylinder. extremity of the cylinder is tapered and screw-threaded externally, and a correspondingly internally tapered and screw-threaded clamping ring or collar is fitted over the front or branding end of the instrument while a similarly tapered and screw-threaded cap attached to or formed with a hand piece is screwed on to the opposite end. If desired the peripheries of said clamping ring and collar may be providedwith flats so as to accommodate spanners.

Instead of forming the holder of two semi-cylindrical or partly cylindrical solid metal portions, said holder may be built up of circular metal disks each having a number or character stamped out therefrom and each divided diametrically or otherwise into two separate portions, said disks being superimposed upon one another within a tubular casing split for a short distance and screw-threaded externally at each end and adapted to be clamped by means of a ring and cap as above described.

In operation the mating portions of the holder bearing the desired identification sign are placed together and a sufficiency of needles is dropped into the channeled sign,

after which the clamping ring or collar f and cap 9 are screwed on by means of spanners, closing the two portions of the holder and tightly forcing together the group or groups of needles 0 which are thus securely held in the form of the required sign. The

projecting points of the needles are then dipped in a branding or tattooing solution and are applied to the gums of the animal.

In the construction shown in Fig. 4 the holder is constituted by a number of circular metal disks m each of which has a numeral or character stamped out therefrom and is divided diametrically or otherwise into two separate portions, said disks being superimposed within a tubular casing n split for a short distance from each end and adapted to be clamped by means of a ring f and cap 9 as above described.

In both constructions, in the case of letters or signs such as D, O, 8, or the like, the said solid central portion or portions of the sign may be formed by means of one or more blanks of the required shape, adapted to be surrounded by the needles and held in place by the clamping pressure exerted when the parts of the instrument are assembled.

hat I claim is 1. Apparatus for branding animals comprising, a holder consisting of detachably connected coacting members, there being an identification character part-formed in each of said members, a series of branding needles for demountable retention in said holder in the form of said identification character, and means for retaining said branding needles within said holder.

2. Apparatus for branding animals comprising a holder consisting of detachably connected co-acting members, there being an identification character part-formed in each of said members, a series of branding needles for demountable retention in said holder in the form of said identification character, said detachably connecting co-acting members being provided with tapered and externally screw-threaded extremities, and means for detachably connecting said members.

Apparatus for branding animals comprising, a holder consisting of a pair of detachably connected co-acting members, there being an identification character partformed in each of said members, a series of branding needles for demountable retention in said holder in the form of said identification character, said detachably connected coacting members being provided with tapered and externallyscrewthrcaded extremities, a hand-piece taking on to one extremity of said holder and a clamping ring taking on to the opposite extremity of said holder, said hand-piece and said clamping ring serving to connect detachably the coacting members forming said holder and also serving to clamp said branding needles in operative position therein.
