To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, TILLIAM E. lHUGHES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mineral Ridge, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented new and 4useful Improvements in Gun-Cleaning Devices, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to a gun cleaner, and more particularly to the class of rotatable gun cleaning devices.

The primary object of the invent-ion is the provision ofa device of this character in which the bore in the barrel of a gun, rifle, boiler tube or the like may be thoroughly cleaned of foreign matter and wiped out.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character in which the wiping head may be readily and easily removed when the same becomes dirty or worn, ythereby permitting the application of a new one in its stead.

A furt-her object of the invention is the provision'of a device in which the wiper may be simultaneously rota-ted' and advanced within the bore'in the barrel of a gun, thereby removing foreign matter from the wall of said bore for the thorough cleaning of the same.

.A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eiicient in operation, and inexpensive in manufacture.

Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

`In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gun cleaner constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal sectional view through the handle thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view through the plug.

Slmilar reference characters indicate corr responding parts throughout the several and in this instance, is made from steel, the same being formed with a spiral groove 6 in its outer face, the trend of which is throughout the length thereof. Integral with or otherwise secured to one end of the rod 5 is a collar 7, provided with an internal thread, in which is detachably engaged a wiping head, comprising a squared stem 8 having opposite threaded ends 9, one of which is detachably engaged in the collar 7 and the opposite carrying a knurled lock nut 10, the squared stem 8 receiving a pair of resilient plugs 11, between which'are held iieXible circular-shaped wiping cloths 12, the inner plug 11 being seated against an annular shoulder 13 formed on the stem 8, while the outer plug has its bearing against the lock nut 10, so that the cloths 12 will be held fast between the plugs for the wiping of the wall of a bore in the barrel of a shot gun, as will be presently described.

Surrounding the rod 5 is a sleeve 14, carrying a set screw 14 engaging in the groove 6, and on this sleeve and surrounding it is a resilient stopper or plug 15, which is adapted to tightly fit within one end of the barrel of a gun, so that upon reciprocating the rod, which is passed centrally therein, the wiper will be caused to simultaneously rotate and longitudinally move within the bore of said barrel for the cleaning thereof, so as to remove all foreign matter from the wall of the bore in the barrel. Detachably connected with the rod 5, at the remaining end thereof, is a hollow handle 16, in which is fitted a stationary tube 17, the same being of less length than the handle. Passed through the tube 17 is a spindleor stem 18, the same being formed at one end with a squared socket 19, in which is fitted a correspondingly shaped outwardly tapering reduced end 20 on the rod 5, the socketed end 19 being transversely apertured and likewise said end 20 of the rod, for detachably receiving a cotter pin 21, thereby connecting the rod 5 and stem 18 together. Formed on the opposite end of the stem 18 is a rotatable head l22, the latter abutting against one end of the tube 17 interiorly of the hollow handle 16, the outer end of the handle having screwed therein a removable cap 23 for closing the same and preventing the removal of the stem 1 8 therefrom, yet permitting the free rotation of the said stem -within the handle.

In cleaning a gun barrel, an operator grips the handle 1G, and by pressing inwardly thereon, subsequent to the insertion of the rod 5 Within the bore of said barrel and the tight fitting of the plug 15 in one end of the barrel, the rod 5 Will be Caused to simultaneously.rotate and move longitudinally in the said barrel, thereby advancing the Wiper and causing the simultaneous rotation thereof :tor the thorough cleaning of the bore of the barrel.

IVhat is Claimed is: f

l. The combination with a Compressible plug, of a spirally grooved rod slidable through the plug, an adjustable member Carried by the plug and engaging in the groove in the rod, and a Wiper head detachably connected to one end of the rod.
