Description
A. L. MC'KAY. Vapor Burner.
Patented April 26, ,1870.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARCHIBALD L. MCKAY, OF BOLTON, MISSISSIPPI.
IMPROVEMENT IN GASGEN ERATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 102,293, dated April 26, 1870.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD LAFAY- ETTE MCKAY, of Bolton, in the county of Hinds and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas-Generator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactl description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a device for generating gas for illuminating purposes; and consists in arranging a generating shell or casing around a tube containing gasoline or other hydrocarbon liquid, from which gas is generated, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a view of a gas-generator constructed according to my invention, the same being partly in section. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a wellknown generator, and is presented here to show my improvement.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondn g parts.
A is a tube which conveys gasoline or other hydrocarbon liquid from an elevated reservoir. B is a stop-cock therein. O is a casing or shell, the upper portion of which, D, envelops the tube A. E is a thumbscrew, by means of which the casing C is fastened to the tube, and
which also forms a stop for a small jet of gasoline which is allowed to escape from the tube A into the shell, as seen at F. This jet of gasoline is ignited when it is desired to generate gas. The heat thus produced is made, by means of the part D of the shell, to surround the tube, and thereby vaporize the liquid, (or to generate gas,) which escapes from the burner Gr, where it is ignited for illuminating purposes.
Any smoke which may arise from the burning jet Fescapes through the aperture H. The size of the jet F is regulated by the screw E.
The quantity of liquid which is allowed to pass through the tube A is regulated by the cock B.
By so forming the casing O that the tube A is entirely surrounded and enveloped in a heated atmosphere, the loss of fluid from the burning jet F is reduced so as to he scarcely appreciable.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The easing O, by means of which the conducting-tube A is entirely surrounded, substantially as and for the purposes herein shown and described.
ARCHIBALD L. MGKAY.
