porting UNITED STATES PATENT oErIo-E.
GEORGE A. LUTZ, or P AINEIELE', NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO AMEEICAN CIRCULAR LOOM ooMPANY; or. PORTLAND, MAINE, A CORPORATION OF MAINE.
SUZPIORT .FOIR. ARTICLES TUBE ELECTROPLATED.
Application filed January Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Ap1a9, 1912.
7, 1-911. Serial No. 601,468.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnouon' A, LnTz, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Plain'field,"in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful linproven'ients in Supports for Articles to be Electroplated, of which the following is a specification. he object of my invention is to simple and efficient means to supportpipes, conduits, anckanalogous articles within an electroplating tank or apparatus in such manner that the surface of the article throughout its entire length will be subjected to the electrolyte'andcurrent, and my invention has particular reference to supporting pipes that are provided with threads at both ends so that the My invention comprises novel details of improvement and combination of parts that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference isto be had to the accompanying drawings forming part'hereof, wherein,
Figure 1 is a partly broken side elevation illustrating my improvement-s; Fig. 2 is a view at right angles to Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged broke-n detail of the support; Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4. 4, in Fig. 3: and 5,111 Fig. 3.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresi nding parts in the several views.
' The numeral 1 indicates a supporting member shown in the form of :1V rod adapted to be suspended from any suitable support, hanger 2. Rod 1 is provided with as shown at 1, to detacha hook or eye on the hanger 2, the hanger 2 being shown cepending from. a rod 3 of a cathode or supframe of an electroplating apparatus, although rod 1 may be supported in any suitable manner from such catho frame. Rod 1 is adapted to be passed through the article to be plated, such as pipe 4, and at the lower end rod 1. is provided with a detachable or adjustable support for the pipe. For this purpose I have shown support 5 in the form of an angle-plate having a slot or opening 5 receiving the lower end of rod 1. The slot 5 enters support 5 at the angle whereby part of the slot enters each wall of the angle-planter); I have shown slot 5 as having an enlarged part 5 in one ably engage shown at 2,
threads will be exposed at all parts to the electrolyte.
de or wall and a reduced part 5 in the otherwall communicating at the angle of the plate for the passage laterally through the slot of the lower end. 0t rod 1. Rod 1 is provided with a head 1 at its lower end, beyond. the neck or reduced part 1 of the rod, the part 5 of slot 5 being" sufficiently large to receive head 1 while the part 5 of said slot is smaller than said head, but receives the neck 1 of rod 1, whereby support 5 may be hung upon the rod,
In using my improvements the pipe, tube or article to be plated is passed over rod 1, the support 5 is moved sideways with respect to the lower end of rod 1 so that the head- 1 and neck 1 pass through the corresponding parts of slot 5, whereby support; 5 is. hung upon rod 1, and then the pipe is lowered to rest or stand upon support To remove the pipe it ismerely necessaryto move the support 5 sideways to detach itfrom the rod 1. By having the support 5 of metal it forms conductor between the pipe and the rod 1. I
In accordance with my improvements the pipes or the like to be plated may be readily applied. to or removed from the supporting rod, and when supported upon the rod the exterior surface of the article will be fully exposed to the electrolyte in the tank of the electroplating apparatus into which the articles will be lowered. This will be found ot advantage. particularly where pipes or tubes are to be electroplated throughout their full length and are provided with screw threads at. their ends which are also to be electroplated, as distinguished from pipe supporting devices known to me which are provided with screw threaded sockets into which the threads at the ends of the pipes are screwed tor supporting the pipes, whereby a portion of the threads at least are thus necessarily let't unplated.
31y improvements will be found advantageous "n apparatuses for electroplating pipes to serve as conduits for conductors in" electric wiring systems, since it is desirable, where the pipes are electroplated and provided with thregli'tls at one or both ends, to have such threads electroplated throughout.
Having now described my invention what I cl aim is:
1. A supporting device of the character described. comprising a rod provided at its l lower end with ahead, and a support in angular form having a slot open through the i angle of the support and extending partlv into both walls of the support adapted to rest upon said head. 5 2, A supporting device of the character described comprising a rod having ahead at the lower end and a reduced neck above the head, combined with a plate in angular form having a slot opening through the an- 10 gle' of said plate and extending into both its walls, one part of the slot being adapted to receive said head and the other part of the 'slot being adapted to receive said neck.
3. Avsupporting device of the character I '15 described comprising a rod having a head at the lower end and a reduced neck. above the head, combined with a plate 7 in angular form provided witha slot'extendingg;v through the angle into-the Walls of the-platefthe slot being provided with an enlarged Por- 20 tion inv one wall of the plate to receive-said head and with a. reduced portion in its other wallto receive said neck.
Signed at Sew York city, in the county of New York, and State of New York, this 4th 25 day ofvJanuary, A. D. 1911'.
