7 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. HILL, a cititageously used in connection with a boiler for quickly heating water prior to entering the boiler.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hot water heater having coils of tubing arranged above a burner whereby the coils can be thoroughly heated with a minimum expenditure of fuel.
A further object of the invention is to provide a heater of the above type consisting of comparatively few parts easily assembled, durable and efficient for the purposes for which they are intended.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the heater, Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line XX, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a detached clamping band. Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a detached burner support, and Fig. 5 is a diagrammatical view showing the adaptation of the device in connection with a boiler.
The reference numeral '1 denotesa pipe adapted to be connected to a water boiler or receptacle, said pipe having a central partition 2. The pipe 1 below and above the partition 2 is provided with bosses 3 and 4 having openings adapted 'to receive the upper and lower ends 5 and 6 respectively of coils of tubing 7 and 8, the coil of tubing 7 being arranged within the convolutions of the coil of tubing 8, whereby the coils of tubing will occupy a comparatively small space and bafile a flame that passes upwardly from the lower convolutions of said coils. The lower end of the pipe v1 is adapted to admit cold water to the lower convolutions of the coils 7 and 8, and as the water is heated within said coils it passes 7 into the upper end of the pipe 1 and is dis charged into a water boiler or receptacle in communication with said pipe. The partition 2 in the pipe 1 separates the hot water from the cold water or in other words, itprevents the commingling of the hot water with the cold water.
To confine the heat of a flame in proximity' to the coils 7 and 8, said coils are incased by a cylindrical vertical shell 9, preferably made of a single sheet of metal bent to a cylindrical form with the meeting edges thereof cut away, as at 10 to provide clearance for the ends 5 and 6 of the coils 7 and 8 respectively.
The shell 9 is maintained in a cylindrical form by metallic bands or straps l1, each strap having one end thereof providedwith an opening or slot 12 to receive a malleable tongue carried by the opposite end of said strap, said tongue being inserted in the opening 12 and bent to lock the strap in engagement with the outer sides of the shell 9. Fitted upon the upper end of the shell is a cap 14 having an exhaust pipe 15, and this cap is adapted to assist in confining the heat around the coils 7 and 8. Riveted or otherwise mounted, as at 16 in the lower end of the shell 9 is a bracket 17 having a bifurcated lateral support 18 for aburner 19. This burner is of the ordinary and wellknown type and is adapted to receive a supply of artificial or natural gas from a suitable source.
The coils of tubing 7 and 8 are of a small diameter and a sufficient number of convolutions are used whereby the water passing in the lower ends of the coils will be thoroughly heated before passing out of the upper ends of the coils. The arrangement of the coils baffles the flame of the burner 19 and retards the heat units sufiiciently to insure a thorough heating of the coils.
What I claim is A water heater comprising a verticallydisposed pipe provided with an integral partition to provide a cold water and a hot water section, said cold water adapted to communicate with the sources of supply and said hot water sec-tion adapted to communicate with the boiler, a pair of coils of tubing having the upper convolutions thereof connected with the hot water section one above the other, the lower convolutions of. said pair of coils connected section with said cold water section one above the said shell, and a burner carried by said sup- 10 other, a vertically-disposed cylindrical shell port.
