subject of the King of 'Hungary, residing at Hammond, in the parish of Tangipahoa and State of Louisiana, have invented cer- Y tain new and useful Improvements in rI-Iat- Pin-Point Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to hatpin-point protectors, and the object of my invention is to provide the pointed end of a pin in a manner as hereinafter set forth with a detachable protector and lock adapted to prevent pedestrians from being injured by the pointed end of the pin, and to lock the pin in a hat whereby it cannot become accidentally displaced.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed. Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a protector and lock for the pointed end of the pin, Fig. 2 is a vertical cross sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the protector and'lock.
Detachably mounted upon the lower pointed end of the pin 1 is a protector and/ lock comprising a body made of sections 33 and 34 connected together in any suitable way. The lower ends of the sections 33 and 34 are enlarged to provide a knob 35 to facilitate the gripping of the protector or lock. kThe sections 33 and 34 have the confronting faces thereof, at the' upper ends, cut away to provide a tapering seat 36 for a funnel-shaped sleeve 37 adapted to provide an easy entrance for the pointed end of the pin 1. The small or innerend of the sleeve 37 is in communication with a recess 38 in the inner faceof the section 34 and with a groove 39 in the inner face of the section 33. The section 33 is provided y 'in the presence of two witnesses.
with apertured lugs 40 extending into the recess' 38, and pivotally 'mounted between theselugs by a pin 41 is a locking lever 42. The locking lever 42 has the upper end thereof bent at right angles, as at 43 and notched, as as 44 to receive the lower pointed end of the pin, the notched end of the locking lever forming a tooth that frictionally engages the pin and retains the same within the groove 39 and the recess 38.
Engaging the lower end ofthe locking lever 42 is a fiat compression spring 45 secured to the inner face of the section 33 by screws 46 or other fastening means. This spring is adapted to normally maintain the upper notched end of the lever in engagement with the pin 1 when said pin is placed within the protector and locked. The lower end of the locking lever 42 has a push-pin 47 extending through an opening 48 provided therefor in the section 34, and by pushing the pin 47 inwardly, the upper notched end of the locking lever can be moved out of engagement with the pin 1.
What I claim is A hat pin point protector comprising a sectional head adapted to be detachably mounted upon the shank of the pin and having the confronting faces of the sections thereof at the upper ends'recessed to provide a tapering seat, a funnel shaped sleeve mounted in said seat and projecting beyond said head, said sleeve having its lower end positioned flush with the lower terminus of said seat, one of said sections having its inner face formed with a longitudinally extending recess with which the lower end of said sleeve communicates, apertured lugs carried by the inner face of the other of the sections of the head and extending into said recess, a spring pressed lever pivotally connected intermediate its ends to said lugs and provided with a nose extending parallel with the inner end of said sleeve, said nose adapted to engage the shank of a pin for locking the latter in the head, means connected to that section provided with lugs and engaging the lever for maintaining the nose in engagement with the shank of the P111, cessed section to enable the shifting of the lever to release the pin. y
