ASSIGNOR TO AUT() STROP COMPANY, OIF
NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION 0F NEW YORK.
SAFETY -RAZOEL Application led October 15 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known t-hat I, HENRY J. GAIsMAN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of N ew York city, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide improved means for adjusting the guard of a safety razor toward and from the blade edge, and for holding the guard in positions of adjustment.
ln carrying out my invention I provide a frame or support having a handle, a guard or blade seat provided with an extension having two adjacent members pivotallysupported, and a worm journaled upon the frame or handle and coacting with said members, whereby the guard may be adjusted with respect to the blade edge and will be retainedA in set position.
Further details of improvement embraced within my invention will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein,-
Figure 1 is a rear View of a safety razor embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a similar sectional side view; Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 3, showing the parts in a different position; Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of part of the guard or blade seat, and Fig. 6 is a detail section of a modification.
A suitable frame is indicated at l and is shown provided with uprights la spaced apart and supporting a rod or shaft Q to which a suitable blade holder 3 is attached, the arrangement shown being such that a strop may be passed through the frame beneath blade 4. The guard cr blade seat 5 may generally be of any suitable construction, and is shown having blade engaging lugsI or hooks 5X and also provided with an extension 5fL that passes through an opening Specification. of Letters Patent.
C in handle 6, to have freedom of movement in said opening. Extension .7 has two adjaj cent members or branches 5*. 5': shown loj cated within handle 6 and provided with a bore or bearing 5d receiving a pin or rod 7 l passing through handle C, whereby the I guard is pivotally supported. The adjacent members or branches 5b, 5C may be formed Patented Apr.. 9, 1912.
Serial No. 522,712.
outer end with a linger piece l1, which may be provided at its outer corners with projecting ears 11 for convenience in operating the sameby the finger. Worm is shown provided with threads 10a receiving a nut 12,
l whereby the worm is rotatively and movably supported. In assembling the parts the members 5b, 5 are passed through the opening 6a and pin 7 is passed through bore 5d; then the worm is passed through the threads of members 5", 5 and through the bearings in the handle and retained in position.
In using the device, when the Worm is rotated i-n one direction, the guard wil-l be moved forwardly, as in Fig. 4, to release the blade from'the hooks or lugs 5X, whereby' the blade may be swung upwardly and removed or replaced, cleaned or stropped, and when the worm is rotated in the opposite direction, the blade being placed upon the guard or seat, the latter will be moved inwardly to retain the blade in position with respect to the guard, as in Fig. 3. As the worm operates simultaneously upon the adjacent meinbers 5b, 5 of the guard extension the tendency will be to cause the worm to be held firmly by frictional engagement with the threads 9, 9 as to retain the guard or blade seat securely in set position by reason of the independent movement permitted the mem-- bers 5", 5, as distinguished from the action of a worm in a single nut, whereby looseness between the threads of the nut and the worm or screw might arise.
lvhile I have illustrated a practical embodiment of my invention, it will be under? stood that changes may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit thereof.
ln this application I do not broadly claim a guard having an extension pivotally supi ported bv or within the handle and operated by a worm. since that subject matter is embraced in my application for safety razors, tiled September 4:, 1909, Serial No. 516,165.
Having now described my invention what I claim is l. A safety razor comprising a blade support, a guard or blade seat provided with an extension having a pair ot adjacent separated members, a pivot' supporting said members, and a worm working in threads in said members.
2. A safety razor comprising a blade support, a blade seat or guard provided with an extension having a plurality of adjacent members provided with alined threads, means to movably support said members, a worm coacting with said threads, and means to retain the blade upon the blade seat or guard.
3. A safety razor comprising a blade support having a handle provided with an opening, a guard having an extension passing freely through said opening and provided with a plurality of adjacent members, means for movably supporting said members, and a Worm Working in threads in said members.
4. A safety razor comprising a frame provided With a pivotally supported blade holder and Vhaving a handle provided with an opening, a guard having an extension passing through said opening and provided with a pair of adjacent substantially parallel members, means on the handle pivotally supporting said extension, and a worm working in threads in each oi said members.
5. A safety razor comprising a frame provided with blade supporting means, a guard having an extension and provided with a pair of adjacent members having a bore at the lower' part and alined threaded openings above said bore, a pin entering said bore to pivotally support the guard, and a worm working in the threads of said members.
6. A safety razor comprising a blade support, a guard provided with a pivotally supported extension, and .a worm Working in threads provided on said extension, said worm having a handle provided with opposed outwardly extending ears spaced apart.
7. A safety razor comprising a frame having a blade support, a guard having an eX- tension passing into the handle and pivotally supported therein, and a worm journaled upon said handle and working in threads upon said extensiomsaidworm having a handle at one end and a nut at the opposite end.y
, 8. A safety razor comprising a blade support, a guard provided with blade retaining means, means for pivotally supporting the guard, a worm, means for pivotally supporting the worm, complemental means on the arm coacting with -the worm, and means `for retaining said worm in set position.
Signed at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York this 11th day of October, A. D. 1909.
