EDGAR A. CUSTER, 9F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE CUSTER SANDLESS CASTING- COIEIEANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA,'A CORPORA- rron' nsnawann.
NGN-ANNEALED CAR-WHEEL No Drawing.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR A. Cr'srnii, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Non-Annealed Car- Wheels, of which the following is a speciflcation.
My invention relates to wheels of any size and sect-ion, and particularly to car wheels,
and the invention consists in producing an integral cast iron non-annealed wheel which may be used as cast and which does not require any annealing process whatsoever, but which shall have a chilled tread and a homogeneous body free from shrinkage strains of relatively soft and machinable metal.
My improved car wheel may be of any standard size or design, and is preferably cast in a permanent mold of any desired construction, which will permit parts of the mold to be withdrawn from contact with the casting as desired. Consequently the parts of themold forming the. hub and spokes of the casting may be withdrawn as soon as the metal has set, but the parts of the mold which are in contact with the tread and flange may be. permitted to remain in position fora longer period of time, and until the metal in' the tread and flange has been chilled.
Preferably the molten metal is rapidly cooled and is brought swiftly to the point of setting almost-- simultaneously throughout all portions of the casting in contact with the mold. Thereupon the parts of the mold in contact with any portion of the casting which it is desired to make machinmaking the parts of the mold adjacent to such portions of the wheel relatively thick in section, thusproviding a large heat-absorbing capacity in the mold adjacent to such portions of the wheel. Preferably also the parts of the mold adjacent to the tread and flange of thewheel are kept at arela Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 9, 1912 Application filed December 12, 1910. Serial No. 596,926.
l tively low temperature. sothat the'heat will i be absorbed very quickly flj'om the cooling metal. Preferably the temperature of the mold adjacent to the portions of the wheel which it is desired to chill deeply is not permitted to rise above 600 F.
By causing the molten metal to set almost simultaneously throughout the casting and of the mold from certain portions of the casting such as the hub, spokes or plates or the inner portion of the rim, the casting will be free from shrinkage strains and all .tendency of the casting to pull apart will be avoided and the wheel, except the tread and flange, will consist of homogeneous metal. I
In my improved construction the body of the wheel is of homogeneous material of very fine grain throughout, which can be easily machined and is free from shrinkage strains. The tread, however, is chilled and contains the characteristic white crystals of v chilled iron. Consequently no annealing process is necessary as the wheel is ready for use as it comes from the hook]. with a machinable hub and a chilled tread.
I claim as-Iny invention:
1. An integral cast iron nonannealed wheel having a chilled tread and homogeneous body free from shrinkage strains with a centercomprising machinable metal.
2. An integral cast iron non-annealed Wheel having a chilled tread and homogeneous body, free from shrinkage strains, with a center comprising soft metal having a fine gram.
3. An integral. cast iron non annealed wheel having a chilled tread and having its hubfspokes and rim free from shrinkage strains and of machinable metal.
' 4. An integral cast iron nonannealed wheel free from shrinkage strains having portions of homogeneous machinable metal of line grain throughout and having portions of chilled iron containing white crystals.
An integral cast iron non'- annealed hub, spokes and rim of homogeneous machinable metal of a fine grain throughout, and having its flange and tread of chilled iron containing white crystals.
6...An integral cast iron non annealed Wheel produced in a permanent mold which promptly withdrawing or separating parts- -wheel free from shrinkage strains having its causes the molten metal to set swiftly almost homogeneous body free from shrinkage 0 simultaneously throughout, said wheel havstrains \v1th a center of inachinable metal, mg a homogeneous body free from shr1nkand having a flange of harder metal;

7. An integral cast iron nonannealed EDGAR A. GUSTER, wheel produced in a permanent mold WlllOh Signed in the presence of causes the molten metal to set swiftlysimul- AMBRosE L. OSHEA,
