Abstract
12,734. Canda, F. E. June 7. Casting ; welding.-Metal wheels for railway cars, locomotives, &c. and belt pulleys are made with caststeel hubs 2 and rims 1 connected by spokes 3 composed of tough welding metal and welded to the rim or hub, or both. The spokes 3 are formed separately, and are placed in a suitable mould 4. Metal is first poured into the rim mould 7, which is provided with two gates 7<x> pening into the bottom thereof and with a number of vents. After the rim has solidified, metal is poured into the hub mould 8 provided with a gate and vent as shown. The cope 4<11> and drag 4<1> have radial partitions 5 and rings 6 to prevent the destruction of the hub mould during the contraction of the rim. The spokes are welded to the hub and rim by the action of the high temperature of the molten metal, and the pressure resulting from solidification. The wheel is finally annealed by raising it to a cherry-red heat, and allowing it to cool very slowly. The hub may be made of cast iron, when the spokes are merely mechanically attached thereto. The spokes may have holes 9 in their ends.
