Be it kpown that I, citizen of the United States, Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and 'useful Improvement in Car-Underof-which the following is a full,
exact description,
residing at St.
clear, and appertains' to make and use the same, reference being had-to the accompanying drawings, forming part of which- 7 Figure 1 is a-half plan view 'ofmy improved car. underfra'me;1Fig. 2'is aivertical -Eig. 1; Fig. 3 is atrans'verse section taken approximately on line'-3'3, Fig. 1; Fig. at
. is a'transversesecti'on on fine yl, F1g; -1';- Fig. 5 is a plan new of the casting to which the ends of thetruss rods are ancho1-'e d;'-liig. 6 is a transverse section taken on line 6+6, Fig. 5-; Fig. 7 is a side elevational viewof the ca'stingseen in 1 Fig.5.
invention relates to a new and usef-ul improvement in underframes for railway'rolling'stock, the .ob'ect being to sus-v tain the major ortion'jo the load 'by the center sill member and to transmit-pulling and bufling strains direct through suchcenter sill member. i
- With this object in view, the inventionconsists in providing a casting. at the bolster point for the anchorage of the. ends. of ten- -35 'sion rods arranged substantially in the vertical plane of the center sill member and spaced apart therefrom,at the center of the car, by means of suitable struts.
In'the drawings, 1 indicates the center sill member which is shown as a special rolled H-beam extending from bolster to bolster and, preferablyslightly beyond the bolster webs'for the attachment of'the draft sills 2, which latter are connected by means of suitable'connection plates'to' the end sills 3.
4 are the bolster webs secured at their inner ends to the vertical legs of the H- Vrc'ron M. SUMMA, a-
,such as will enable others skilled inhe art-to which it:

taken approximately;
and, whose outer endsare'connected to the side sill members 8, which, in this instance, .may be comparatively light, as the principal portion of the load'is supported by the cen-' ter sill. 9 is a casting whose top and bottom flanges are riveted or otherwise secured to the horizontal web of the H-beam and to the bottom bolster plate 5, said casting having a hollow boss 10 for the reception of the king pin and having vertically disposed depending flanges 11 extending inwardly from the bolster and secured to theinner faces of the vertical legs of the .H-beam. This cast? ing is also provided with perforated lugs 12 reinforced. by suitable strengthening webs between which are mountedtruss rods 13,
-the eyes of said truss rods. being held in position by a. pintle rodl L-[These truss rods 13 thus anchored at each end of the car, pass-under struts or queen posts 15 which'are secured between the'legs of the H-beam and to the horizontal flange thereof.
Suitable turn buckles 1Q are'arranged at.
appropriate points in the lengths of the rods for well known purposes.
My improved underframe isextremely simple in construction and comparatively light for the load designed to be carried. By its use, deep fishbelliedcenter sills are avoided and the parts can be readily repaired when necessary.
I claim:
1. In a car underframe, the'oombination of bolster members and a trussed center sill construction in which the compression member is in the form of an H-beam to whose ends the tension members are anchored.
2. In a car underframe, the combination of bolster members and a trussed center sill construction comprising an H-beam compression member, struts, tension rods and castings interposed between the legs of the H-beam and secured to the horizontal web thereof.
S. In a car underframe, the combination of bolster members and a trussed center sill construction comprising an H-beamextending beyond the bolster points, draft sills connected to the vertical legs of said H- beam, anchoring members, and tension rods secur'\d to said anchoring members.
4. In a car underframe, a trussed center sill in the form of an H-beam, struts interof bolster members and a center sill construction for car under-frames comprising an H-beam, castings secured to the horizontal web and vertical legs thereof at or near its ends, struts secured to said H-beam, and
tension rods cooperating with said str uts 10 and anchored in said castings.
In testimony whereofI hereunto'eifix my signature in the presence of two witnesses,
this 27th day of May, 1911.
