MACHINE FOR STUFFING- PILLOWS AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 9,1912.
Application filed September 26, 1911. Serial No. 651,372.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Machine for Stufling Pillows and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide an efficient and satisfactory machine for stuffing pillows such for example as are usually applied to hammocks with material as excelsior or wood fiber which is exceptionally difficult to feed and handle by mechanical appliances.
Among many embodiments of the invention I have selected one and have illustrated it in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1, is a top or plan view of the machine with parts broken away. Fig. 2, is a sectional View taken on the line 22, of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is an end view of the machine, and Fig. 4, is a side View taken in a direction opposite to that of Fig. 2.
In the drawings 1, is a guide having slots 2. As shown the guide is somewhat funnel-shaped, the flaring portion 3, afiording means for receiving stulfing or excelsior and the tubular part 4, serving to deliver the same into the pillow or like cover. The slots 2, are shown as formed in the bottom of the guide and extending from the flaring part 3, to the tubular part 4. There are two sets of coiiperating fingers 5 and 6, operatively arranged in respect to the slots 2, and whereof one set of fingers, 5, is adapted to feed stuffing and whereof the other set of fingers 6, is adapted to operate as a stripper. The arrows in Fig. 1, indicate the path traveled by the fingers 5. The fingers 6, are projected and retracted and operate in the region of delivery of the fingers 5.
7, is a guide through which the fingers 6, are endwise movable.
The fingers 5, are projected through the slots 2, and in traveling forward feed excelsior through the guide. The fingers 5, are then withdrawn and this may be done with a quick motion. The fingers 6, strip or clear any excelsior that may catch at the ends of the slots and by a repetition of these opera tions the excelsior is satisfactorily fed forward through the guide.
8, are the members of a spring clamp which may be used for holding the pillow cover to place on the outlet end of the guide.
Evidently the fingers may be operated by means of a variety of mechanism. However, referring to the drawings 9, is a pitman to which one end of the bar 10, carrying the fingers 5, is pivoted.
11, is a cam the "follower of which is applied to an intermediate portion of the bar 10. The cam 11, and pitman 9, impart to the bar 10, the proper motion for causing the fingers 5, to travel in the path described. The quick rise 12, of the cam 11, when present, causes the fingers 5, to be quickly withdrawn from the guide as has been described. The bar 13, is pivoted intermediate of its ends and at one end has sliding connection as at 14, with the fingers 6, and at its other end this bar 13, is operated upon by an eccentric 15. The pit-man, cam and eccentric are operated from the main shaft 16, by means of suitable gearing 17.
18, is a guide for the bar 10.
As shown the fingers 6, are staggered and the ends of the slots 2, toward the outlet are not in alinement.
What I claim is:
1. A machine for stufiing pillows with excelsior or the like comprising the combination of a guide having slots, two sets of cooperating fingers operatively arranged in respect to said slots and whereof one set is adapted to feed stuffing and whereof the other set is adapted to operate as a stripper, and means for operating said fingers, substantially as described.
2. A machine for stufiing pillows comprising the combination of a guide having slots of unequal lengths, a set of stuffing feeding fingers, a set of staggered stripping fingers, and means for operating said fingers in connection with said slots, substantially as described.
3. A machine for stufling pillows comprising the combination of a funnel shaped guide provided with slots extending from its flaring to its tubular part, two sets of cooperating fingers operatively arranged in respect to said slots and whereof one set is adapted to feed stufiing and whereof the other set is adapted to operate as a stripper, and means for operating said fingers, substantially as described.
4. A machine for stuffing pillows comprising the combination of a slot-ted guide, feed fingers adapted to be projected through said slots to travel therein and to be withdrawn therefrom, fingers working through said slots and adapted to be projected and Withdrawn in the region of delivery of the feed fingers, and mechanism for operating said parts, substantially as described.
5. A machine for stuiiing pillows comprising the combination of a funnel shaped guide provided with slots, a bar having feed fingers, a pitman for reciprocating the bar, a cam and follower for raising and lowering said bar, a pivotal bar having stripping fingers slidably connected therewith, a guide for the last mentioned fingers, an eccentric for oscillating the pivotal bar, and means for operating said parts, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
JAMES B. PATTERSON.
