PROTECTIVE PLATES FOR BULKHEAD-OPENINGS AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 9, 1912.
Application filed April 6, 1910. Serial No. 553,865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Grusnrrn MAZZOLINI, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Naples, Italy, gentleman, (whose post-oflice address is 145 Via Santa Lucia, Naples,
Italy,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protective Plates forBulkhead-Openings and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
In order to protect the frames of doors, ship hatchways, etc, forming watertight closures and to prevent the accumulation of foreign bodies, such as coal, nails, particles of wood and iron, on them or rather on the places where they must be tightly closed, the present invention provides the arranging of protecting iron plates on the sills and on the jambs of the door frames, which plates turn on hinges and are in engagement with each other in such manner that at the closing of the door the vertical plates are turned inwardly, and the sill plate is turned upwardly.
A form of construction of the protective device is shown in Figure 1 in perspective view and in Fig. 2 in horizontal section.
The protective device is rotatably fastened to the door-frame, and the part 6 which protects the sill, is at its ends turned up at right angles (Z and 2'. The vertical sidepieces 0 and g are, at their lower ends, partly rounded and in addition they are at certain places provided with helicoidal projections f and h, which engage the turned up ends (Z and 2' of the part a which covers the sill. hen the door, which is built as a sliding door, moves from A to B across the opening, it strikes part 0 and consequently the latter rotates on its hinges. In this rotary movement, the part 0 presses with its projection f against the turned up part (Z of the part c, which covers the sill, and the latter is rotated on its hinges, whereupon the other bent part i, exerts a certain pressure on the projection h of the part g, and causes a rotary movement of part 9 on its hinges.
Having described the invention, what I claim is:
1. In combination with a door frame, a sill plate hinged at one side of the frame and having upturned ends and a pair of jamb plates hinged at the same side of the frame and at opposite sides of the opening, the
lower end of one of said jamb plates being adapted when rotated to engage the outer surface of one of the upturned ends of said sill plate and the lower end of the other of said j amb plates being engaged by the inner surface of the other upturned end of said sill plate as the latter plate rotates about its hinges, whereby as the door is closed all of said plates will be rotated about their hinges.
2. In combination with a door frame, a sill plate hinged at one side of the frame and having upturned ends, and a pair of jamb plates hinged at the same side of the frame and at opposite sides of the opening, the lower end of one of said jamb plates being adapted, when rotated, to engage the outer surface of one of the upturned ends of said sill plate and the lower end of the other of said amb plates being engaged by the inner surface of the other upturned end of said sill plate, as the latter plate rotates about its hinges, the said jamb plates being provided with projections with which the upturned ends of said sill plate engage, whereby as the door is closed all of said plates will be rotated about their hinges.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
