COMBINED OIL AND GAS BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 9. Hi1".
, Application filed lune l, 1910. Serial No. 564,37l8.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED R; An'riiour, United .States, and resident of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Oil and. Gas Burners, of which the following is :1 specification.
The present invention relates to improve ments in burners which are adapted to burn a mixture of atomized hydrocarbon and air or a suitable gas mixed with air, and the object ofthe invention is to provide a burner of this type or class which shall consist of a minimum number of parts, and by which. in case it is employedfor burning gas, a more intimate and thorough mixing of the gas and air prior to discharging the same through the outlet or combustion orifice of the burner will'be effected than has been accomplished with the constructions heretofore proposed or employed.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a longitudina l sectional View through a burner constructed in accordance with the present invention;- Fig. 2-is a transverse sectional view on the line 2-42. of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view substantially on the line3-3 of Fig. 1.
teferrin-g to the drawings, it will be seen that the improved burner includes acasing composed of a body section A preferably made substantially circular in cross-section, having one end entirely 0 en, and provided adjacent its other end wit a lateral branch 13 constituting an air inlet. The open end A of the main casing is inclosed by a cap C which is adjustably connected with the section A by a suitable thread 1) so that the cap may be moved longitudinally of the body of the casing. The interior of the cap C which forms a continuation? of the chamber provided by the section A is of greater diameter or cross sectional area than the interior of thebody of the casing, and in its outer end said cap is provided with a centrally arranged outlet or combustion opening E.
Fitted within and extending through an opening formed in the end Wall F of the casing opposite said adjustable cap. 1s a;
.to the enlarged section of the ch members M, M,
. provided,
fitting preferably made as a casting in which are formed two concentric duct-s or conduits G, H the portions of which outside of the casing extend in opposite directions and are adapted to be respectively connected with suitable oil and gas supply pipes, I, h'f'Said fitting or casting may be secured in the opening in the end wall of the casing by any suitable means, a set screw L being shown in Fig. 1 for this purpose. p
Referring to Fig. 1, it will be seen that the inner oil pipe or duct G extends throughout the length of said casting and substantiaily amber with in the adjustable cap C. its inner end the pipe or duct G terminates in an interiorly threaded socket in which screwed a plug that will be hereinafter more particularly described. The bore or passage with in the duct G is gradually reduced in diameter adjacent the plug socket to form a la poring seat with which cooperates a tapen ing plug valve N, the stem 0 of which extends to the outside of the burner andis connected with a hand wheel P by means of which it may be adjusted to control the feed of oil from the duct G as desired. The spraying or atomizing plug comprises two the latter having a thread ed section at the rear, that engages the thread in theoil supply pipe, and an ex panded head Q, the outer forward surface of which is; substantially parallel with the inner surface of the end of thecap Qwhereby there is provided an annular passage It that communicates with the outlet or dislid charge opening E and with the interior of the body of the burner ca. rig. By. ad-- justing the cap ma be found desirable.
lX hiIe various forms of atomizing or spraying devices may be provided at the discharge end of the oil duct, itis preferred to use a form similar to that herein shown in which the outer member M1? is The inner plug member as shown extends C it will be seen that'the width of this passage R can be varied as with a central chamber S'that communicates with the tubular passage in inc AW 7 and I somewhat beyond-the threaded 5 member- M and base central extending passage adapted to c from the reservoir formed in 5 portion of the pipe G'to said :1. I The ducts or o l discharge pas tend vtangentially from the tubul in the member M. so that the therethrough under pressure 10 whirling or centrifugal motion casing. At its outer end the 4 g is provided with a suitable o'p'eiu :i "si suitable ,.r i U i communicates with an outwar v j ice connected with passage or depression in the 6543;. he oil din of the plug which passage or C. casing throu extends substantially to the an annular BKli-Qllu" it I). By such a construction the l 3 discharged into the burner form of a body of very fine spr be surrounded and mixed with ing through the burner casing sage R at the outer end thereof. The conduit H is arrange/l is of less length than the oil duct provided at its end Within the b ing' with a plurality of opening as shown in Fig. 1, are inclined escaping therefrom is delivered body of air entering through the and in the direction in which the air and gas move toward the lJ'W'" E.
