To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, REUnEN D. Coi', a citizen of the United States, residing at Glencoe, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a printing press of the type which prints upon a continuous web, and the invention has for its object to provide certain new and improved devices, constructions and arrangements, to be hereinafter described, which are by preference employed conjointly in the manner shown, and when so employed have a particular cooperative relationship and a particular utility, as will be apparent, and constitute a web press having certain novel fealures and capacities; but which devices, con.
structions and arrangements may nevertheless be employed separately, in presses constructed differently from that here shown, or as improvements upon other forms of presses nonT in use.
The press of the present invention in its general characteristics follows the arrange- I ments shown in my Patent No. 863,591,
granted August 20, 1907, in which the printmg surfaces, o-r coperat'ing printing and impression surfaces extend only part way around thecircumference of the c vlinder in each case, therest of the cylinder being cut away, the web being carried on a reciprocating frame or gate which moves'forward at a speed that will carry the paper through the printing point at the surface speed of the cylinders and which moves back at. a quickened speed, the cylinders constantly revolving in the same direction at a uniform speed; the web, furthermore, being fed from the gate during the interval between printing operations. Wit-h respect to a press of this general character, Whethergthe same be used for offset printing or not, lthe present invention has for objects to provide a novel mechanical movement for imparting motion to the gate in 0 posite directions at different speeds by which perfect accuracy is insured, and new and improved arrangements for feeding the lweb over the gate, which permits the web to be severed in sheets of any size, regardless of the size of the printed impressions, thereby making the "press an all-size press, and which prevents any undue tautness or looseness ofthe web in the press.
.The invention has for further objects such other new and improved constructions, ar rangements and devices relating to printinn' presses, ,and particularly to rotary we presses, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is illustrated in a preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, wherein* I Figure 1 is a longitudinal section taken through a press constructed in accordance with my invention, certain familiar parts being omitted for the purpose of clearness of illustration. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view illustrating the construction of the cylinders. Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are detail views, showing the parts in different positions, illustrating a mechanical movement for imparting motion to the gate in opposite directions at different speeds.. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view illustrating a portion of the mechanism for giving intermittent movement to the feed cylinders. Referring to the drawings,A, A designate the cylinders of the printing couple, B the paper roll, C the web, which, of course, is taken continuously from the roll, and D the reciprocatiner gate provided at oppo` site ends with ro 1ers E, E', over which the paper runs.
F is a feed cylinder around which the paper passes be ore it goes over the gate, and F is av feed cylinder around which the paper passes after leaving the gate.

I claim:
' l. In a web press, the combination with printing means, of a gate which supports the web, and mechanism for imparting movement to said gate in opposite directions at different speeds comprising a rack on said gate, a pair of pinions connected so that they rotate together, one of said pinions meshing with said rack, a sector gear which has constant rotation and which intermittently meshes with one of said pinions, an
oscillating sector gear ofy greater radius which meshes with the other of said pinions, a radial slide-Way on said oscillating sector gear and a crank rotating in unison with said rotating sector gear' constructed so that -it slidably engages with the slide-way on said oscillating sectory gear, while the rotating sector gear .is out of -mesh with its pinion.
2. In a printing press, the combination wit-h printing elements formed with co-acting surfaces and with recesses between said surfaces, of a reciprocating gate which carries said web through the printing point and which'is returned after each forward movement 4by a return movement at an 1ncreased speed, and means for feedmg sald web from said gate at intervals between printing operations comprising a feed cylinder arranged in' advance of said gate, a feed cylinder arranged back of said gate, said cylinders being geared together, means for intermittently driving said cylinders, a roller bearing against the forward feed cylinder, the web being loosely wrapped around the rear cylinder, supporting means for said web back of said rear feed cylinder, said means comprising supporting devices spaced apart between which the web may be looped, and a weight in said loop of the web.
3. In a printing press, the combination with printing elements formed with co-acting surfaces and Vwith -recesses between said surfaces, of a reciprocating gate which cari ries said web through the printing point and which is returned after each forward movement by a return movement at an increased speed, and means for feeding said web from said gate at intervals between printing operations comprising a feed cylinder arranged in advance of said gate, a feed cylinder arranged back of said gate, said cylinders being geared together, means for intermittently driving said cylinders, a roller bearing against the forward feed cylinder, the web being loosely wrapped around the rear cylinder, supporting means for said -web back of said rear feed cylinder, said means comprising supporting devices spaced apart between which the web may be looped, and. a weight in said loop of the web, said web adapted to be constantly fed to said supporting means.
