To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, Nivrnaninn Fisn and HENRY I'IODGKINSON, residing at Darwen, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mechanism for Putting Cover on Cloth in Looms for NVeaving, of which the following is a specification.

An objectionable feature in weaving is that the cloth often presents a raw, uneven, or reedy appearance caused by the cloth being badly or insufliciently covered. Faults in the cloth such as thick and thin places are also more in evidence, and the cloth on the whole in consequence is inferior in quality.

Our invention is designed to improve the general appearance of cloth woven in looms by putting cover on the cloth by mechanical means, the action of which consists essentially in imparting a vibratory movement, from the oscillation of the slay, to the back rod, or a rod used in substitution for the back rod of the loom, or any other contrivance to raise the top warp threads, so as to tighten them at the moment of the beat up thereby putting cover on the cloth, the attachment being made between the back rod or the like and the hand-rail of the loom for obtaining the required effeet.

For attainment of the object of our invention, an attachment is made between the hand-rail and an arm mounted on a shaft and communicating motion to two arms or collars also mounted on the same shaft, whereby with the forward moven'ient of the slay, the last named arms will be raised, or the collars rotated partially, and will raise the back rod or the like, or its equivalent to produce the like effect through the medium of an attachment between them and such back rod or the like.

Our invention will be fully understood by reference to the annexed drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a back view of a loom top, while Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of a loom fitted with our invention.

In these views, a piece of leather or other flexible or suitable material 1 is fixed to the slay-cap or hand-rail 2, and by means of a cord 3 a link 4 and a cord .5 is connected to an arm 6 mounted on rock shaft 7 This shaft Specification of Letters Patent.

is carried by L brackets 8 bolted to the loom top behind the loom. A collar or the like 0 may be fixed to the shaft to prevent end moven'ient. Fixed near each end of the shaft is an arm 10, or a collar or the like fixed at each end may be substituted for the arms. Between these arms or collars and the back rod 11 a suitable connection is made. This connection consists of a leather strap 12 fitted to leather loops 13 retained in position by the cord 14 which passes through them, and holds the back rod, or its equivalent. End movement of the backrod is thereby prevented. Vith the oscillation of the slay, the top warp threads are tightened at the moment of the beat-up, thus putting cover on the cloth.

In a loom having a warp-stop motion, in which the back rod is dispensed with, we place, as an alternative, just behind the pinbox of the warp-stop motion, a rod which is put beneath, instead of between, the sheet of warp threads coming from the warpbeam, and which is connected by attachments to the arms 10 in a similar manner to the arrangement already described.

In a modification, the shaft 7 may be a fixture, and motion eommuni :ated to bellcrank levers loosely mounted on the shaft by attachments between them and the slaycap or hand-rail, the opposite ends of the bell-crank levers being connected to the back-rod by suitable attachments.

It will be perceived from the foregoing description and from a perusal of the annexed drmvines, that instead of the said means intermediate of the back rod or the like and the hand rail or other part of the slay, other means may be adopted for producing; the desired effect from the oscillation of the slay, and all such means, we should consider as falling within the scope of this invention.

\Vhat we do claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A device for putting cover on cloth which comprises, in combination with the hand rail and the back lease rod of the loom, a horizontal rock shaft supported at the top of the loom and provided with oppositely projecting arms, link connections between the hand rail and an arm at one side of the rock shaft whereby the shaft is positively rocked at the moment of heat up and link connections between the back lease rod names to this specification in the presence and the arms at the opposlte slde of the of two subserlbing Witnesses.
