1 f i i F ATTORNEYS 1 WILLIAM THOMPSON, 0F YORK, N. Y.
CONVERTIBLE BED AND DIVAN.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that LWILLIAM THOMPSON,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Convertible Bed and Divan, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved convertible bed and 'divan arranged to permit of conveniently converting the bed into divan or vice versa, without much physical exertion on the part of the operator. For the purpose mentioned use is made of a middle bed section and two end bed sections, of which the middle bed section is adapted to form the divan seat, and of the said end bed sections one is pivoted on the middle bed section to swing. upward for forming the back of the divan, and the other is mounted to slide forward or backward and under the middle bed section.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part ofthis specification, in
vertible bed and divan with the parts ex-- tended to'form a bed; Fig. 2 is a rear end elevation of the same with the parts in folded position to form a divan; and Fig; 3 a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
The middle bed section A is mounted on a frame B adapted to rest on the floor or other support, and the said frame B is provided with sides C adapted to form the sides of the divan when the convertible bed and divan is used as a divan. At one end of the middle bed section A is pivoted the end bed section D, adapted to be swung down into horizontal alinement with the bed section A when the device is to be used as a bed, or the said section Dis swung up into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, whenever the device is .to be used as a divan. The end section D is provided with pivoted legs E to support the end sect-ion D from the floor when the said end section is in horizontal position to be used as part of the bed, and the said legs E are adapted to form a brace for the end bed section D Specification of Letters Patent.

when the latter is swung upward to form the back of the device, the lower ends of the said legs E then resting on the rear end of the middle bed A. Links F connect the sides of the frame B with the legs E, and each link F is pivoted at F on the frame B, and the free end of the link F is provided with a slot F engaging a pin F held on the corresponding leg E, so that a sliding connection is made between each link F and the corresponding leg E, to permit using the legs E as a brace, as. will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 3. The legs E are provided with stop pins E engaging recesses D formed in the end bed section D to limit the swinging movement of the legs E relative to the end bed section D at the time the latter is in upright position, forming the back of the divan. An end bed section G is mounted on a frame H adapted to travel on the floor or other support, and the said end bed section G is adapted to pass under the middle bed section A when the device is to be used as a divan, but when the device is to be used as a bed the end bed section G is drawn out in a forward direction to form an extension of the middle bed section A, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1 and is pivoted at I a lever I pivotally connected at one end at I by a link J withthe end bed section D. Each lever I is provided at the other end with a pin 1 engaging a vertical guideway H formed on the frame H at the rear end thereof, so that when the end bed section D is swung down the links J impart a swinging motion to the lovers I which by their connection with the guideways H move the frame II and consequently the end bed section G in an outward direction, and when the end bed section D is swung upward then a reverse or inward traveling motion is simultaneously given to the frame H and the end bed section G The bed spring is made in two parts, of which the bed spring K is attached to both the middle bed section A and the end bed section D, while the otherend bed section G tion L is folded on top of the section L and forms the seat of the divan, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 3. The mattress section L of the middle bed section A is provided with a depending apron L to extend in front of the frames Band H as well as the sections A and G, so as to cover up the same when using the device as a divan, and when the device is used as a bed,
- the apron or flap L rests on top of the end bed section G and under the mattress sec tion L The outer end of the mattress section Lis provided at the under side with a hood L fitting over the free end of the end bed section D so as to'hold the said mattress section L in position on the end bed section D at the time the latter is used for forming the back of the divan.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and. desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A convertible bed and divan, comprising a middle bed section and two end bed sections, of which the middle section forms the seat of the divan, one of the said end bed sections being pivoted on the said middle bed section to swing upward for forming the back of the divan, and the other end bed section being mounted to slide forward into extended position for a bed and backward under the middle section when forming a divan, and means connecting the said sections with each other for swinging the said swing bed section upward and simultane ously sliding the other sliding bed section inward or for swinging the said swing bed section downward and simultaneously sliding the sliding bed section outward into extended position. r
2. Aconvertible bed and divan, comprising a middle bed section and two end bed sections, of which the middle section forms the seat of the divan, one of the said end bed sections being pivoted on the said middle bed section to swing upward for forming the back of the divan and the other end bed sect-ion being mounted to slide forward into extended position for a bed and backward under the middle section when forming a divan, and a lever pivoted on the said middle bed section and pivotally connected at oneend with the said swinging bed section and pivotally and slidingly connected at its other endwith the said sliding bed sectlon.
