Bce it knownthat vwe, A1-. Ex A. FAUCHERy and THADDnUs CROSBY, citizens V `of thel United States, residing at San Jacinto, in 5 the county of4 Riverside and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Reversible Clutches;
and we do hereby declare the following to be' f a full, clear, and exact description of the inlrO vention, such-as will enable others skilled'in the `art to which it appertains tomake and*v use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures 'o-f reference marked'thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in automatic clutch releases andnon-reversible crank devicesfor internal combustion engines and the object `in view is to produce a simple and 'eliicient device of this naturewhich will 'avoid-acci.- dents'which are common in the starting or cranking of engines of this type.'
The invention ,consists of a `-simple and eflicient devicel of this kind having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will b e herein` after fully k.described and then specifically dened in the appended claims.

Reference now being'had to the details of the drawings byvletter, A. designates the 40 usual frame of the chassis of an automobile,
B the motor shaft mounted in suitable bearings and which has tted thereto a clutch collar D.- Fixed adjacent to said collar is a disk E having1 a series of ratchet teeth F $5 upon one face thereof and adjacent tothe marginal edge of the` disk. i
' A crank shaft, designated by letter I-I, is journaled in suitable bearingsl upon the frame of the -v apparatus and has a crank handle I-I fitted thereto.v Loosely mounted upon said crank shaft is a collar N held from longitudinal movementupon the shaft Aby means of the projecting p i'ns I upon either side of saidv collar and' which project fromA the crank shaft. Saidl collar is pron l vided with v i'ametrically vopposite grooves or channels 0 in which the. arms Q of the pivotal bar Q 'are disposed. l
Pivotally mounted upon a pin R which 'is fastened to a part of the frame of the apparatusv are the bars P' whichare spacedapart 'and between which a pivotal pawl P', isv `mounted, which latter is journaled upon a pin J, said pawl being adapted to engagev the series of ratchet teethwhen the pawl is at its farthest limit toward said disk.
A link S is fastened at one end to the bar' Q and 'its other end to one f the bars carrying the pawl, one edge of said bar Qbeing .adapted to bear against the bars P when it isdesired to crankl the engine. A pin T` passes through the'crank shaft and itsv projecting ends Vare adapted `to engage the shouldersl of the clutch lcollar upon vthe engine shaft to cause the latter tov rotate when the crank isturned and, when said pin T is in engagement 'with the shoulders of the clutch collar, thepawl will be held 'inferi-f gagement withl the ratchet teeth upon the disk E by means of'a spring G.
In-o'peration, the crank shaft is Vnormally held at its farthest outer throw in which position theinner end of thesame and the pin carried thereby will be out of contact with: 'the clutch collar upon the engine shaft and 85 also the pawl will be held out of the teeth f of the ratchet lteeth upon the disk. In the event of it beingldesired to crank themengine, thefoperator by taking ,hold jofffthe crank shaft and .imparting a longitudinal 90 movement to the same will cause thev pin T I to be thrown against the shoulders of the j clutch collar and, bygiving a rotary movement to the crank shaft, will cause the engine or motor shaft to be rotated. As the crank shaft is' moved longitudinally, the pivotal 'forked bar will cause the pawlto be thrown into engagement with thev ratchet teeth of the disk. In the event of therebeing any reverse movement to the engine 100 shaft, such `as the kicking back of the same incident to starting the motor, a rapid reverse motion will cause the dog'engaged;A by the ratchet teeth to throw quickly the ivotal bar, the forward forked end of; wich engages the loosely mounted collar upon the rcrank shaft l and thus quickly irripart an outer longitudinal movement. to the-esame, returning the crank shaft to lts normal position. This outer movement of thecrank 110 to itsnormal position and the clutch mechanism out of gear, the device'being entirely automatic in its action.
What we claim to be new is c 1..An automatic clutch release for cranking internal combustion-engines comprising',` in combination with the motor Shaft, a clutch collar and a ratchet wheel fixed thereto a ,longitudinally movable crank shaft, a clutch pin carried thereby, a collar swiveled vupon said crank shaft, -`a pivotal forked bar engaging said collar, a pawl engaging the teeth of said ratchet wheel, and connections between the pawl and said forked bar.
2. An automatic clutch release for cranking internal combustion engines comprising,
in combination with the motor shaft, a' clutch y collar and 'a ratchet wheel yfixed thereto, a
longitudinally movable crank shaft, a clutch pin carried thereby, a collar swiveled upon 'said crank shaft, 'a pivotal forked bar engaging said collar, pivotal bars, a pawl mounted upon the latter and adapted to engage the ratchet teeth, said bars being in the path ofsaid forked member and adaptedr y to be tilted thereby as the crank shaft is moved, toward' the clutch' collar, and connections between the pawl carrying bar and said forked bar.

An automatic clutch release for cranking internal combustion engines comprisin in combination with the motor shaft, a clutc collar and a ratchet wheel fixed thereto, a longitudinally movable crank shaft, a clutch pin carried thereby, a swiveled collar upon saidcra'nk shaft, a pivotal forked bar engaging said collar, pivotal bars, a pin carricd thereby, a spring-pressed pawl mounted upon said pin and adapted to engage the teeth of. the ratchet wheel whenthe pawl is at its farthest throw toward the -ratchet wheel, a link pivotally connecting one of said pa-wl carrying bars with the forked bar.

in combination with the motor shaft, a clutch collar and a ratchet wheel Xed thereto, -a longitudinally movable and'rotatable crank shaft, pins projecting therefrom, a collar swiveled between said pins and having diametrically opposite grooves, a clutch pin'.
carried by the crank shaft, a plate pivoted to the frame 'of the` apparatus and` havmg forked arms engaging said grooves, swinging bars, a pawl carried .by the latter and adapted to engage the teeth o f the ratchet wheel', and a link connecting one of said swinging bars with the ,forked bar.
