exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, ref erence being had to the'accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to portable chutes of the class more particularly adapted for use in connection with the unloading of coal, crushed stone or other bulk matter from gondola cars or the like; and it has for its object the provision of an improved chute of this character which is strong, durable and economical in its construction, capable of being easily and quickly changed from one car to another, and is easily operable to dump a load into a wagon or other conveying means arranged to receive it.
The invention is fully described in the following specification and a preferred embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a front view of a chute embodying my invention and mounted on a car. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof with the dumping gate open. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section of the discharging end of the chute, and Fig. 4 is a side view of one of the chute supporting brackets.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a car of the gondola type, B the chute, and C the supporting brackets therefor.
The chute B, which is mostly of metal construction, is of trough form, having the bottom 1, the ends 2, 2, the forward top portion or roof 3 and the front dumping gate 4, which latter is hinged at its upper edge to a rigid frame bar5 preferably of angle-iron which connects the forward ends of the ends 2, 2 at their upper edges. The ends 2, 2 are preferably set in converging planes to effect a gradual forward narrowing of the chute and have their top edges in inverted V-form, as shown. The roof 3 connects the upper forwardly and downwardly inclined edges of the ends 2,or the portions thereof disposed in advance of the apeXes of their top edges, such roof extending forward to the bar 5.
Thebrackets C are of triangular form and each comprises an upright member 10, which rests against the side of a car and has a hook 11 projecting therefrom for engaging over the top edge of a car side, a chute supporting member 12, which projects forwardly and downwardly on an incline from the upper end of the member 10, and the bracing members 13, which rigidly con- When the brackets are attached to a car side the chute is placed thereon in an inclined position shown and the hooked arms 14, which are attached to theunder side thereof, are engaged over the upper edge of the car side to retain the chute in position thereon. The arms 14 are removably hinged to members 15, which are riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the under side of the chute bottom, thus enabling arms 14 of different lengths to be attached to the chute as occas1on may requlre.
For the purpose of locking the gate 4 in closed position a shaft 16 extends lengthwise of the forward end of the chute bottom, being journaled in bearing-arms 17 projecting therefrom and has rock-arms 18 projecting in a common plane laterally therefrom in position to be rocked into engagement with the lower edge of the gate to prevent an opening thereof, or to be swung free from gate obstructing position. One end of the shaft is angled to form a crankarm 19, and when the shaft is in gate closing position such arm preferably projects rearward and upward as shown in Fig. 1. A chain 20 is attached to the free end of the arm 19 and is intended to have any one of the links thereof engaged to a hook 21 on the associated rear end portion of the chute, as it may be desired to hold the crank-arm in one position or another.
It is apparent that I have provided a strong and simple construction of chute which is capable of being easily and quickly attached to and removed from engagement With a car side, and when engaged therewith to hold a large quantity of coal, crushed stone, or other material capable of being shoveled therein. Then the wagon or other receiving conveyance has been placed under the discharge end of the chute the operator moves the crank arm 19 to swing the shaft arms 18 out of gate obstructing position and the gate then swings open by the weight of the load which discharges thereunder into the conveyance.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction or arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations appear in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. A car chute comprising supporting brackets capable of being removably attached to a car side and having inclined upper sides, a chute loosely resting on said brackets and having hooks capable of removably engaging the car side, a gate hinged at its upper edge to the forward end of the chute, and means for releasably holding the gate in position to close the forward end of the chute.
2. A car chute comprising supporting brackets capable of being removably attached to a car side and having inclined upper sides, a chute removably supported by said brackets and having hooks capable of removably engaging the car side, a roof over the forward portion of the chute, a gate pendently hinged at the forward edge of said roof to close the forward discharge opening of the chute, and means for releasably holding the gate in position to close the forward end of the chute.
3. A car chute comprising supporting brackets capable, of being removably attached to a car side and having inclined upper sides, a chute loosely resting upon said brackets and having means for engaging a car side, said chute comprising a bottom, opposite forwardly converging-ends, a top connecting the forward end portion of the ends, a frame rigidly connecting the bottom, ends, and top at the forward ends of the chute and forming'a discharge opening at the forward end, and a gate pendently hinged to the top of said frame and capable of closing the discharge opening, and means for releasably securing the gate in closed position.
4. A chute comprising supporting brackets capable of being removably attached to a car side and having inclined upper sides, a chute removably resting upon said brackets capable of being releasably attached to a car side, said chute comprising a bottom, forwardly converging ends which have the forward portions of their upper edges inclined downwardly relative to their bottom planes to vertically restrict the discharge end of the chute, a roof connecting said inclined portions of the ends and cooperating with the ends and bottom to form a restricted discharge opening, a gate hinged to the top to close said opening, and means for releasably holding the gate in position to close the discharge end of the chute.
