APPARATUS FOR SCRUBBING- AND POLISHING FLOORS.

1911, on an application filed the 30th day of November, 1910, and of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to procure a simple mechanical apparatus whereby the scrubbing and polishing of floors may be.
quickly accomplished without the necessity of the operator kneeling or stooping, and one in which effective polishing pressure may be exerted upon the polishing brush during its manipulation by the operator.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which similar reference characters will be employed to designate corresponding parts, and in which- Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the apparatus; and Fig. 2 shows a side elevation, illustrating in dotted lines the mode of operation. To secure the above results the apparatus comprises a brush A which may be a scrubbing or polishing brush of any usual con struction and which is provided with a block a fastened to its back which receives the pivotal pin a which connects the brush to the lower end of a carrier B. The carrier B is slotted at its lower end as shown at b to receive the block a of the brush A. The lower ends of the yoke members of the carrier B are preferably rounded as shown at I), thus permitting the carrier B and the brush A to have a free relative rocking movement. The upper end of the carrier B is provided with a projecting shank b of less width than the body of the carrier and preferably flattened upon its sides. The shank b is pivotally connected to a pressure lever G at the forward end of said lever, which as shown is provided with a slot 0 to receive the shank 22 said shank swinging upon the pivotal pin 0. The arrangement is such that the carrier B has a free rocking movement with relation to the pressure lever C The pressure lever C at its other end is hinged by means of a leaf hinge D to a platform E having ,upon its under side a rib H which is designed to rest upon the floor, and upon the platform E the operator places a foot while manipulating the device. The hinged connection between the pressure lever C and the platform E is substantially at the middle of said plat-form, the rearward extension 0 affording a placeforthe operators foot, and the forward extension 6 affording means to which the pressure lever C may be connect-edas by means of the links L in such manner that the upward movement of the pressure lever C with relation to the platform E is limited and restricted to the extent of the combined lengths of the links L while affording a free downward and pressure securing movement to the pres sure lever C.
In operation the brush A is moved while in contact with the floor back and forth as shown in the dotted lines in Fig. 2. This is otally connected at one end as at 7, within the slot 6 of the carrier B, and this lever F passes through and is guided by the slot 0 in the pressure lever C and is further provided with any suitable means to be grasped by the hands of the operator such as the handle bar G. The platform E at its rear end and upon its under surface is provided with a supporting rib I-I having a rounded surface which has contact with-the floor.
The parts may be made of any firm ma terial, preferably some suitablehardwood. In operation the platform E rests upon the floor, the rib H being in direct contact with the floor, and the operator places his right foot thereon, grasping the handle bar G, and moves the operating lever F back and forth, as shown inthe dotted lines in Fig. 2, thus imparting reciprocating movements to the brush A. The device may be moved from right to left as desired to change the point of operation of the brush.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. An apparatus for scrubbing and polishing floors, comprising a suitable brush,
pressure lever, a pivotal connection between said pressure lever, and brush, a platform, the pressure lever hinged to the platform for vertical movement with relation to the platform, means for limiting the upward movement of the lever with relation to the plat-form and means for reciprocating the brush carrier.
2. An apparatus for scrubbing and polishing floors, comprising a slotted brush carrier, a brush pivotally mounted within the arms of the slotted carrier, a slotted pressure lever receiving the upper end of the brush carrier and to which said brush carrier is pivotally connected, a platform to which the pressure lever is hinged and a lever pivoted to the brush carrier and extending through the slot of the pressure lever and provided With a handle bar.
3. An apparatus for scrubbing and polish ing floors, comprising a slotted brush carrier, a brush pivoted within the arms of the carrier, a slotted pressure lever receiving the upper ends of the brush carrier, and to which said brush carrier is pivotally con-. nected, a platform to which the pressure lever is hinged, means to limit the upward movement of the pressure lever, means for reciprocating the brush carrier, and means upon the under surface of the platform to raise it above the floor at one end.
